Rome controlled a large area of the Mediterranean world for so long by the use of military power; they conquered other nations with their large armies. Strict observant of Roman customs was also used to govern and intimidate people, helping to maintain control of such a huge empire. They also used positive incentives encouraging people to collaborate with them. They ruled the Mediterranean world for 507 years until their downfall. The main languages used at the time include Latin, Greek, Aramaic and Hebrew. There were many cultural and ethnic groups that included Hebrews, Romans, Corinthians, Christians, Jews and Galileans. The regions at the time spread out across the Mediterranean and were named, Corinth, Macedonia and Phrygia. Some cities named were Rome, Galilei and Jerusalem. People transported their goods on carts with giant wheels, or if some goods were smaller they would carry them in sacks on their backs. If travelling by sea, sailing vessels man powered by slaves would also carry goods.

Paul was raised a strict Jew and unlike many people around that time he did receive an education. As a Jew he persecuted Christians. One day he was pursuing a group of Christians in Dimascas when he saw a blinding light, at that moment Jesus had come to him in a vision and told him to go and see a man named Ananias who would baptize him. Saul repented and transformed into a messenger of the gospel and changed his name to Paul. Therefore, it was profound that Saul became a Christian because as a Jew he had once persecuted Christians, but he was now responsible for spreading Christianity

Paul's first missionary journey was the shortest of his three journeys. He visited a total of nine communities. Paul first started his missionary journey in Antioch in Syria. He traveled to Seleucia and sailed on to Salamis, where he stood outside of a synagogue and preached the word of God (Acts 13:15.) From there Paul traveled South-west to to the island of Paphos where he became the leader of his many missionary groups. He then traveled across the Mediterranean to Perga, the other Antioch, Iconium, Lystra and Derbe all of which are in modern day South Turkey. During this time, during this time he converted many more people to become Christians, and was himself proclaimed a God. St Paul did get persecuted, on one occasion he was attacked with stones and left for dead. However, his disciples helped him, and he returned back to Antioch following the same route appointing priests in every town on his route.

St Paul wrote many letters to communicate with the faith communities he had established. He wrote to churches that he had visited, and his letters were about what Christians should believe and how they should live. St Paul tells churches that God will always be with you, and never to lose faith or hope in God

In the letter to Ephesians, Paul wrote “There is one body, and one Spirt, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” When Paul wrote this to he was living and teaching in a Roman Empire that worshiped many Gods, as did the Greeks. The idea of having one God and a united church challenges the cultural value of the time. This concept also incorporated unity of Spirit and peace. In a time of war and conquest this would have been very controversial to the people, where cultures fought for what they believe in their religion and wars break out.

Pauls message in 1 Corinthians (12 4:7) is explaining the Spiritual Gifts everyone holds in the present. “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.” When reading this message, it shows that it is important to realize that everyone has different gifts, and that everyone has something to offer and that they should share and show the world. Its good for individuals to look at this message because they may not be satisfied with what their personal gift, but they still have something that they can share with others.
