What happened during the Gold Rush?

During the Gold Rush, millions of people from around America rushed to California when they heard that a man had been working by a stream, stuck his hand in, and come up with flakes of gold. They were desperate for money, and they wanted gold, so they rushed to the site. But everyone else did, too. Before long, California was holding a ton of people, all wanting to become rich and find gold. The issue was, there was gold, but not enough for so many people to find it. After nine years, most of the gold was gone, and only a few people had really struck it rich. Many people died or got even poorer than before in attempts to find gold during the gold rush. However, California then become a very developed place and a lot of people who had been trying to find gold settled there.

The Gold Rush occurred because when people heard that a man had accidentally found gold and become very rich, they wanted to become rich, too. That's why thousands of people rushed to California, and the Gold Rush began.
