They were desperate for money, and they wanted gold, so they rushed to the site. But everyone else did, too. Before long, California was holding a ton of people, all wanting to become rich and find gold. The issue was, there was gold, but not enough for so many people to find it. After nine years, most of the gold was gone, and only a few people had really struck it rich. Many people died or got even poorer than before in attempts to find gold during the gold rush.
