"The play invents a scenario where the women of Athens assume control of the government and institute reforms that ban private wealth and enforce sexual equity for the old and unattractive. In addition to Aristophanes' political and social satire, Assemblywomen derives its comedy through sexual and scatological humour."

The play follows a group of prostitutes. As a young man enters their place of work, the older women fight over him as he lusts over a younger woman. As a decree ordains the older women are priority in the hierarchy.

The play is a comedy, over exaggerating aspects for comedic effect. The playwright; Aristophanes was a comedic playwright from Athens who wrote 40 plays. The play is historical, both in the way it was written in 391BC and the way it is performed today.

It’s a fun play, a comic fantasy about women being in charge of government and men reduced to caricatures.

Performance Review
I played Older Women No.2 in our performance, as well as performing The Bacchae. One challenge for me was having to embody an old prostitute and come across as old and hag-like as possible. Learning my lines wasn’t too difficult as I didn’t have very many. Assembly Women is a comedy, so we had to make it as funny as possible and really over exaggerate every aspect, down to the way we walked and spoke. If I am honest, I think I could have improved on this as I feel I got too caught up in and focussed too much on remembering my lines that I didn’t get into character as much as I would have liked. Things I think I did well, however, is working with my fellow cast members and working as a team to tell the story. The Bacchae was the easiest part for me as I didn’t have many lines to remember and the movements were easy to pick up.
