A person without a stable, permanent home is considered homeless. This can mean doubling up with other families, living in inadequate trailers or buildings, or living in shelters. There is usually a catalyst that occurs that puts them in this position such as a job loss, domestic abuse, sudden death, and many more unfortunate circumstances. In this padlet, I will be focusing on homeless students. Homelessness can happen at any age and any grade. It is crucial for educators to be aware of these students to provide them an opportunity to succeed.

https://www.childtrends.org/indicators/homeless-children-and-youth

Homeless students lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. They could reside in a supervised publicly or privately operated shelter. Also, homelessness includes students who will lose their housing soon. Often, homeless students are in families that have experienced a long-term period without living independently in a permanent residence. They frequently move which leads to persistent instability. The constant moving can be expected to continue for an extended period because of "chronic disabilities, chronic physical health or mental health conditions, substance addiction, histories of domestic violence or childhood abuse, the presence of a child or youth with a disability, or multiple barriers to employment."

https://www.childtrends.org/indicators/homeless-children-and-youth

"Stabilize the child’s basic needs. Have food, clothing, shelter, medical care, basic hygiene, and transportation needs resolved." If necessary and possible, find a place for students to shower. Keep nutritious snacks available. Don’t ask or require the homeless student to bring food items or treats to school. Outside of school, homeless students are in a state of constant chaos and uncertainty. Therefore, teachers can alleviate the situation by taking care of their basic needs.

https://dpi.wi.gov/sites/default/files/imce/homeless/pdf/teach_help_hmls_stud.pdf
