Signal Detection Theory: a means to quantify the ability to discern between information-bearing patterns. This theory would postulate that it would be impossible to detect a constant threshold.

Yes it is real. Some companies will put the product in the background of a movie. It's illegal because it is a manipulative way of displaying your product. The viewer doesn't really have a choice to see it or not because they are hard to find.
