Quizlet & Quizlet Live: American Born Chinese Vocabulary

As vocabulary review, we played a Quizlet.live game. Students are grouped into teams. Each member of the team has four answers in front of them. Once the game is launched, each team member gets the same question. The goal is for each student to work collaboratively with their team to determine which one of them has the correct answer (from the four answer choices they have in front of them). If a team member chooses incorrectly, the team has to start over. We did this activity for vocabulary review of the novel we were reading in an English 10 honors class, and students were engaged and having true collaborate discussions, especially because of the competitive aspect of the game. The teams were given animal avatars, and the progress of each team can be projected on the board. The first team to get all of the answers correct wins. Student feedback was positive for this activity as a review for vocabulary.

When we went completely online, I had my classes work on reading through the WV drivers license handbook and complete weekly quizzes for the individual chapters. A large portion of my class are low readers and/or want to pursue a vocational trade that will require a CDL. This helped to meet their need as a young adult, ensured they have help reading through the booklet, and tested their comprehension in small chunks. I had about a 20-30% completion rate with this unit even after students realized grades wouldn't effect them negatively. At the end, I linked them to a free practice DMV test.

I carried my bell ringers into the virtual experience by giving my students a poem each day and asking them to reflect (not analyze) on the poem. The students responded really well to the poems because I chose poems that were a reflection of our national and individual anxieties and hopes. I tried to use local and living poets as much as possible and was able to link the students to these people's blogs and digital presence. I had students communicating directly with poets by their own choosing and it was great.

Some of the problem solving included following prerequisites when scheduling and keeping students on track according to the courses they need. We also want to keep implementing other certifications such as tooling u and osha so they have something tangible that they can use outside of school. This motivates students to want to continue. We are working on continuing organization on this.

I used mentimeter in the classroom while the students worked in pairs to work on different question levels. After we read certain sections of the graphic novel, American Born Chinese, (this could work with any novel or story) each pair was responsible for creating so many questions of each level and sharing them through mentimeter so that they would show up on the screen in the classroom. We then discussed some of the questions in small groups, and some of the questions as a whole class. We even worked on creating their questions to relate to a certain theme or literary idea. (Characterization, plot, conflict, etc.) The students were engaged in the discussion because they were their own questions, they would talk and discuss before we even started as the questions showed up on the screen, and they discussed a bit further than usual because it felt more meaningful to them.

It included instructions on how to access a virtual manipulative via Geogebra and questions that they had to answer regarding what they could do on the Geogebra page. Different videos for further explanation were embedded. Some questions were multiple choice, while others had students explain different things. At the end, students watched a few more embedded videos about how cross sections apply to 3D printing and explained their understanding of 3D printing.

Some of the students really impressed me with their creativity.

I ran an online Song of the Year tournament! Each student had to submit a Spanish song which I then put into a bracket. There were daily competitions and students voted for their favourite to advance to the next round via FlipGrid each day. It was a fun project that could be used across multiple content areas. If students nominate an important author or poem, a piece of music, or a historical event, they can defend their vote orally by recording their video.

They were to use Internet Resources as well as library resources to compile their facts and information. The interior base of the box had cut out construction paper slices resembling that of a real pizza. They were glued in so as each slice could be lifted to read the content under the slice. The rest of the box they used their creativity to decorate as they wished. They were assessed on their creativity, facts gathered , overall presentation, and their sharing with their classmates. They had a blast with it.

I feel really proud of the many clay students who created symbolic works to give to others—among those works were the clay hearts given to all UHS staff and teachers, the ART wind chimes given to our administrators and a special set of clay mask-motifs for Mr. Buchmann. In these pictures the boys shown decided to create set of wind chimes to give to Mr. Buchmann—a substitute teacher—x-art teacher who everyone loves. Mr. Buchmann is fighting cancer and these three joined together to create a crazy set of character clay works—complete with bibliographies of each character to send to Mr. B—who loved it.
