PART 2: Having identified earlier two potential areas to observe the global in work in each of your internships … choose TWO group members’ internships as the basis to workshop ideas further:

1. Set out two or three guiding questions to explore the two potential areas of observation:

Eg. How does a refugee resettlement organisation deal with global governance policies? How does the global trend of workforce casualisation impact the workplace?

2. Detail how will you gather data to answer these questions.

Indicate what areas of the organisation / workplace you will observe, where will you observe these dimensions, who will you talk to, when might be best to undertake the observation?

3. Indicate some of the ethical/professional conduct considerations to undertaking your observations

What information can and can’t you share? And why not?

Everyday multiculturalism in the global workplace
1. How does a global company fit within the local culture? Exploring the tensions between different cultures. What difficulties might they face in a different business environment? Do they need to adapt their company policies? Is there multiculturalism in the workplace to help this transition?
2. How do you navigate different cultural norms between companies regarding everyday operations?

I will gather data through everyday observations, interviews and personal research. Gathering historical information, not just a snapshot of the company now but how it started in Australia and how it's had to change since then.

Need to account for confidentiality in how the company operates.

Two internships that are currently being undertaken include the Humans Rights Watch and Mondo Search (Recruitment Agency).

Overlap and similarity between global governance policies and Macushla's internship, case studies on Ukraine and refugees. Displacement of residents from the war and recent key events. Ability of a recruitment agency to function within a pandemic, employment slump and total lack of new employment due to a lack of travel. Prevalence of the gig economy and a lack of motivation for full-time work combined with poor economic performance. Internalisation of hiring within larger corporations that circumvent the need to hire externally, prevalence of agency and outsourcing.

Informal conversations with clients and colleagues, field-notes collected from work experiences, articles and news articles on current humans rights issue and then generalised information collected from within the office, like public reports and specialised information that is made available to the public. Sitting in on interviews and online meetings between executives and experienced staff.

Ensuring that information is not private and is available to the public as well as all people viewing. Ensuring that staff are made aware of content shared and that all personal or sensitive information isn't revealed.
