Slavery still affects community that afflicted crime, as the 13th Amendment stated that slavery is abolished in the United States, except as punishment for those who committed crime. In the South, "modern slavery" existed, as they are pretty much considered slaves, due to their work conditions and low pay that results in cents per hour. This article is from 2021 and the innocence project is supposedly credible according to many other site and it leans towards left-center bias, as they only deal with issues that are more left-sided.

A quick look into the statistics and causes of mass incarceration from 1925-2020. A good preliminary source to begin the research. Vera seems like a good source since it is a non-profit organization with the main goal of spreading awareness of mass incarceration. This source is biased and pro-ending mass incarceration in America. Another Pro of Vera as a source would be it shows a wide data range of mass incarceration from 1925 to 2020 and this data is very current compared to my second source and compensates for missing relevant data that the 2nd source does not have.

This shows how the 13th amendment loophole that led to mass incarceration had leaked into schools causing a school to prison pipeline. Criminalizing our future to have more bodies to feed to this system. Also, currently impacting us by creating stereotypes seen in media and pop culture. Normalizing not to see it as concerning how some people and institutions see and treat brown and black students.

The 13th Amendment only applies to those who are considered property of others, or slaves, but there are many other ways to be considered a slave. The article goes into depth of what is considered a slave and how. Many are manipulated or exploited for other's profit, which is modern slavery that doesn't goes against the 13th Amendment. The article stated that the UN considered human trafficking as “the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of people through force, fraud or deception, with the aim of exploiting them for profit." Many are taken controlled of in a different way of slavery, that ends in the same result of having a slave.

This source Is an educational source from a university library at the University of James Madison. It seems to be a secondary source because it shows primary sources such as statistics directly from the US Census and comments on the data. Still, the limits to this source would be that it is from 2010 which is relatively outdated compared to current statistics. On the other hand, the main message of the 13th Amendment and mass incarnation is still very relevant to the conversation.
