Roger A. Valcin was my father and I loved him dearly. I continue to do the work I do because I want my children to know their family lineage, our customs, language and ways. I created a video tribute to process my grief and honor his legacy. I hope it will be a blessing to those who watch and are eager to start their own journey of self-discovery.

Charmante Rinvil was a matriarch born on November 11, 1919, in the heart of Grand Goâve, Ayiti, known for its rich culture and history. She was the firstborn of Silvana Bien-Aime and Papa “Dini,” and grew to become the eldest sibling to six others in a lively household that was a cornerstone of their community.

From an early age, Charmante exhibited a profound sense of responsibility and care, which defined her throughout her life. Her journey into motherhood began alongside Francois Nicolas, with whom she welcomed eight children – five sons and three daughters. Each child brought a new chapter of love and challenges, all of which Charmante met with unwavering strength and grace.

The rural community of Baudin was where she spent most of her life, immersed in the rhythms of countryside living. There, she nurtured her family, passing on lessons of resilience and the values of hard work, often tied to the land and community they were part of.

In 1979, seeking a new beginning and following the currents that have historically drawn individuals in search of the American dream, Charmante immigrated to the United States. In this latter part of her life, she resided with her son and grandchildren, where she continued to be the familial anchor, sharing stories of Ayiti and instilling in them the cultural heritage that was her legacy.

Charmante's life was a tapestry of experiences and memories that spanned 94 years. In her transition, she left behind a lineage that extended beyond her immediate family, touching all those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her life story remains a testament to the enduring spirit of a woman who, born under the tropical sun of Ayiti, found her final home under the star-spangled banner, leaving an indelible mark on both lands.

My mother, Marie-Gerard Marais was a woman of remarkable strength, intelligence, and heart. She was my unwavering support, offering love, wisdom, and encouragement through every challenge. Her steadfast presence illuminated my path, reminding me that hope and strength could prevail even in the darkest times. She was my anchor, my guide, and my inspiration. Her spirit lives on in the lessons she imparted to her children, and the love she so generously gave. I honor her not only as my mother but as a remarkable woman whose impact will be felt for generations to come. Marie-Gerard, you will always be remembered, cherished, and celebrated. Thank you for being the heart of my life and the soul of my strength.
