The book takes place a couple years after her dad died. This traumatic event caused her to recede from the world, becoming more distant and driven crazy with depression. She craved stability from someone, that someone being her current OCD brainiac boyfriend, since she couldn't rely on her own family for support. We start to see a change in Macy when she takes a job with the Wish catering team. Delia, Wes, and the rest of the employees show Macy just how therapeutic the crazy can be. As she gets to know Wes, she slowly comes out of her protective shell she's built up for the last couple years and he does the same. I gave it this score because I found the main character very relatable and the fact that it hit some of the hardships of being a teenager. It focused on the reality of making new friends, navigating relationships, and also focused the plot line around some heavy things to deal with. Making new friends was hard for Macy before she met the Wish team because of how stuck she was to the routine she made for herself to instill some sense of normalcy in her life after her dad died. Macy's love interest in this book is Wes, this is made obvious from the first couple chapters of the book. Part of the reason she finds him so intriguing is because he has this bad boy aura to him yet he loves catering and art and he's incredibly accepting of her past because his past isn't the brightest either. The plot really centers around mistakes and deaths that were completely out of the character's control. Macy's dad died due to a heart attack, Wes's mom died, and Delia made the catering business and named it Wish for her sister, who died of cancer. These are all things that these characters had to deal with, and because Delia and Wes have already experienced this, accepted it, and moved on, they play a key role in really helping Macy heal for the first time in years.
