They had to figure a plan to get money and provide for their families. Similar to my mother's ancestors, they had to deal with being enslaved and having to learn a whole different lifestyle, unlearn their African heritage and act/work the way slave owners wanted them to. It effected my ancestors greatly and how they had to "build" themselves back up from being enslaved for over 400 years along with the other slaves that were freed. They had to fight for their rights and freedom. My ancestors were described as activists and that activism has been passed down generations, even to me! On my father's side, they came around the 1940's and during that time the USA entered World War II at the end of 1941 after the attack on Pearl Harbor and FDR died in 1945. My ancestors on my father's side didn't speak English so I think that that affected them.
