The tone of the story was sarcastic. In the beginning Noreen makes many jokes and sarcastic comments about the agents she worked with. You can use the fact that she is able to make jokes about her experience back then as a tell that she holds no resentment towards her time as an agent even though she lost someone dear to her. "I decided to become a member of the Women’s Royal Naval Service. Because I liked the hat. I thought it was most seductive." She makes a sarcastic comment about only joining the naval service because she liked the hat. "He was leaping like a demented kangaroo in and out of four languages." She also jokes about the agent who first interrogated her.

So they decided not to say goodbye because she knew that he had to go since he was the only one fit for the mission. "We kept emotion out of our conversation. I think we were both afraid of breaking down. I know if we hadn’t, I would have broken down, and I’d have begged him not to go."

The theme of the story is love and how it can be wonderful and painful. In the text Noreen found someone she loved who had quite a dangerous job. In the end, he didn't make it back to her while on a mission. Noreen felt all of the effects of love- overwhelming joy and comfort and eventually the loss of the person. in the text her says, "And it was as if a magnet drew us irresistibly towards each other. I couldn’t believe that he could love me." "Can you picture what it’s like to be terribly in love, and know that all you have is a few hours, this moment in time?"

Implicit vs. Explicit Language

The explicit language is shown when she says "Without realizing what had happened, I had been recruited into the hidden world of secret agents on special missions." which tells you what happened to her. But the implicit language allows you to assume what happened before she explained it by saying, "But when I went to sign on, I was taken aside and closeted in a kind of windowless broom cupboard with a high-ranking army officer, who began asking me an awful lot of questions which had nothing to do with the navy." With this you can assume that whatever the officer pulled her away for was incredibly secretive.

The speaker uses a change in point of view to create a personal feeling between you and the author. She uses first person point of view throughout the whole story, except for on paragraph 43 she starts using second person point of view. When she changes the view of the story you immediately feel immersed in the story because it feels like shes talking to you, for example "I imagine you’ve all been in love. Can you picture what it’s like to be terribly in love, and know that all you have is a few hours, this moment in time?" adding this element into the story makes reading it feel like you're having a conversation with the author about something terribly personal.

How do the characters' sacrifices illuminate the authors' messages about love?

The concept of sacrifice within the context of love seems almost inherent. The characters in two of our stories had to lose something and/or felt that they lost something to experience love. For example, In "Price of Freedom" Noreen said "And I was left with a little cameo of a perfect love. Perfect, perhaps, because it had been so brief." When she lost her love, when she took a step back she was able to see that she was left with a perfect love story. Had he come back, her love story could've ended badly.

Discuss the impact of external conflict (e.g., societal norms, family feuds) on the internal development of love in these texts.

I think the impact of societal norms played a huge part in how love was perceived and developed in these texts. For example, in Romeo & Juliet since they could not be together because of their families it drove them to hide their relationship therefore their view of love was secretive. However in "All About Love" the author talks about where she grew up
