         <title>The Compromise of 1850</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In the compromise, California was admitted to the Union as a free state and the remainder of the Mexican cession was divided into the two territories of New Mexico and Utah and organized without mention of slavery. &nbsp;<br>This compromise leads to the civil war because both the North and the South were fighting over slavery, and right before this act, a war in 1846 broke out with Mexico, which didn't help the decision when making this compromise.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This act became known as bleeding Kansas, and the territories of Nebraska and Kansas were made. Allowing the states to vote on whether slavery was legal or not.<br>This act also contradicted the Missouri Compromise and actually canceled it.&nbsp;<br>The violence when Preston Brooks hit Charles Sumner with his cane caused tension between the North and the South. This tension caused more issues between the North and South causing the civil war to come upon them.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>Louisiana Purchase in 1803</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Louisiana Purchase was when the United States bought 827,000 square miles of land from France in 1803. 15 states were created from this Purchase.&nbsp;<br>Due to the fact, America had gained so much land from France there was tension between the North and the South because the South wanted slavery and the North didn't. Because of this, there were many arguments between the two and one thing led to another they started fighting. Which caused some of the civil war to begin.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>Lewis and Clark started the Expedition West in 1804</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were hired by President Thomas Jefferson in 1804 to lead an expedition west to explore the new territory west of America. They traveled more than a total of 8000 miles. This took two years from the Pacific Ocean and back.&nbsp;<br>This event lead to the civil war because the land was open to America. The North and South wanted to use it for different reasons. The South wanted the open area to be used for the slaves and the North didn't want any slaves. There were also already natives living in some of the areas and the natives didn't want to be a part of the slave area.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>Brooks attack on Sumner - 1856</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>During this event, a representative Preston Brooks, a pro-slavery Democrat from South Carolina used his own walking cane to attack senator Charles Sumner, an abolitionist Republican from Massachusetts. He did this because Brooks felt that during Sumner's speech he insulted his relative Andrew Butler.&nbsp;<br>This leads to the civil war because not only do the North and South not get along but they start to attack each other. Saying things in a speech is different that physically attacking them. They didn't want this anymore so it lead to the war to solve the issue. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Mexican cession in 1848</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>&nbsp;The Mexican Cession happened after the Mexican-American war from 1846 to 1848. Mexico ceded 55 percent of its territory, including parts of present-day Arizona, California, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah, to the United States.&nbsp;<br>Because of the Mexican Cession bringing more states into America, there again was this huge argument over the states to be slave states or free states.  With the extra space the North and South fought over the land, thus was the civil war. </div>]]></description>

         <title>The Gadsden Purchase in 1853</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The United States had gained a 29,670-square-mile region of present-day southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico that the United States acquired from Mexico by the Treaty of Mesilla.&nbsp;<br>This extra piece of land was added to the states and it was in the South, which this piece of land in the mix about allowing slavery. It was still in the debate over slavery which caused issues with the rest of the country. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Northwest Ordinance- 1787</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The point of the Northwest Ordinance was to have three to five new states that would not allow slavery.&nbsp; Pro-slavery southerners were willing to go along with this because they hoped the new states would be populated by white settlers from the South.&nbsp;<br><br>But southerners would not join the abolishment movement because they still wanted slavery and they only agreed to the Northwest Ordinance in hopes to help them.  I think this caused some tension between the two because the South wanted something from this but they didn't receive much. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Manifest Destiny 1845</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Manifest Destiny was this belief that everyone had that Americans were entitled to conquer North America.&nbsp; Americans wanted to travel and conquer everything west from America to the Pacific Ocean.&nbsp;<br>With this happening, there was a rapid expansion of the United States. With the expansion of land, there were many debates about what to do with this land and whether it would allow slaves or not. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>A machine that revolutionized the production of cotton by greatly speeding up the process of removing seeds from cotton fiber.&nbsp; Making slaves have to do more work.<br><br>This event lead to the civil war because of this increased production they needed more slaves to harvest and plant more cotton to continue the process. But the North didn't want any more slaves.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Texas Annexation was the 1845 annexation of the Republic of Texas into the United States of America. Texas had been a part of Mexico, and they broke free on and declared independence on March 2, 1836.&nbsp;<br>This also contributed to the Mexican-American war.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;With this new land being brought into the country the big debate was whether it would be a slave state or not, contributing to the tension which would lead to the civil war. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Spanish Cession 1819</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The Spanish Cession was between the United States and Spain in 1819 that ceded Florida to the U.S. and defined the boundary between the U.S. and New Spain.<br>Florida being brought into the country especially in the south would mean that they wanted it to be a slave state. More land means it would be harder to continue deciding which states were enslaved and weren't. Thus causing debates and arguments, leading to the civil war. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Oregon Country was one of the first Manifest Destiny successes. At one point the last was split between America and Britain. We wanted this territory because it would give America access to the Pacific Ocean.&nbsp;<br>With the addition of this territory came more land and deciding whether the North or the South would control it. It had access to the Pacific Ocean making each one want it more. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This formally brought the American Revolution to a close. England recognized the independence of the United States. In addition, the United States secured all of the land east of the Mississippi River except for British possessions in Canada and Spanish territory in Florida.&nbsp; Gained 7 new territories.&nbsp;<br>With this land, a lot of the land was in the North which didn't allow slavery, but the south did. In which the South probably wanted more land because they didn't get as much as the North and couldn't build out. <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This imposed heavy penalties on international traders. However, it did not end slavery or the domestic trade of slaves. Ships were often caught bringing in slaves illegally after this act.&nbsp;<br>The south didn't like the fact that they couldn't intake slaves as they could before. They got caught trying to bring slaves into them. Which caused them to erupt in frustration and anger, causing arguments and tension between the North and South leading to the war. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Fugitive Slave Act 1850</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This act provided for the seizure and return of runaway slaves who escaped from one state into another or federal territory. Meaning any slaves that ran away to the North or a different state would have to be returned.&nbsp;<br>This was great for the South because they would get their slaves back each time. But the North didn't want slavery and fought to keep the slaves in the North so they could be safe. It wasn't fair to the slaves and the North noticed and tried to act on it. Causing the South to get angered and leading to a fight. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Three Fifths Compromise 1787</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This compromise meant that enslaved people would be counted in population totals for representation. So 3/5's of the total enslaved people per state.&nbsp;<br>While the three-fifths compromise brought all of the states on board to ratify the Constitution, regional differences and continuing debates over slavery, representation, and laws ultimately caused a bloody civil war. There was no getting around that the North didn't think it was fair that the South counted people that didn't even get the right to have a say or to vote or anything. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Slave Trade Clause 1807</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This is known as the Importation Clause, and it meant that Congress was not allowed to ban the Atlantic slave trade for at least 20 years.&nbsp;<br>The South of course was in favor of this because they wanted slaves they were the ones who wanted this to stay in tac. But the North, however, did not. They didn't think slavery was appropriate and didn't think the country should allow slavery. Meaning the North fought over this issue and eventually it lead to the civil war. </div>]]></description>

         <title>The Slave Insurrection Clause 1787</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The chief executive has the power and duty to suppress all riots or insurrections in the interest of maintaining law and order.&nbsp; It also included slaves insurrections.&nbsp;<br>This would lead to the civil war because not all slaves agreed that the chief executive should have the power. After all, for them, it didn't mean good things. The North also didn't think this was fair for slaves because they didn't want slavery so they wanted to help the slaves escape or make the South free, causing the war. </div>]]></description>
