The South wanted the open area to be used for the slaves and the North didn't want any slaves. This leads to the civil war because not only do the North and South not get along but they start to attack each other. Saying things in a speech is different that physically attacking them. Because of the Mexican Cession bringing more states into America, there again was this huge argument over the states to be slave states or free states. England recognized the independence of the United States. With this land, a lot of the land was in the North which didn't allow slavery, but the south did. In which the South probably wanted more land because they didn't get as much as the North and couldn't build out.

The south didn't like the fact that they couldn't intake slaves as they could before. They got caught trying to bring slaves into them.
