On pg. 6 there is a great example of imagery, it says "He gazed back at her steadily and then turned to take in the porch, the trees beyond, and to beagle at his feat. He let his hand drop toward the beagle-not reaching for the dog, but as if offering his hand in case the dog should want to sniff it." The Boy on the Porch flips between the characters John and Marta. For example on pg. 72 it says, "Mute" is that what people would call Jacob? Marta wondered. People who did not even know him? "Isn't that what-oh, I'm so sorry-have I upset you? Marta wanted to grab Jacob and race back to the truck, where John would be waiting. She wanted to speed away. But she could not.Instead, she said, "No, no, not at all. Sometimes, well, it's so sensitive, you know?-"This shows a great example of unusual sentences, it's a good example because when Lucy's mother was talking to Marta she asked a sensitive question and Marta didn't know how to respond, because of this there is a gap in the sentence . almost like it's broken into pieces. So the author made it very clear how Marta felt about Jacob not being able to speak.
