As a pioneering organization that supports ocean discovery and innovation, ONC offers a stimulative, supportive environment within a multi-disciplinary culture, celebrating individuals and teams for their distinct cultural and knowledge backgrounds and innovative thinking.</p><p><strong>Closing date April 3, 2024 at 4 p.m.</strong></p><p><strong>The Position</strong></p><p>ONC is seeking a passionate and experienced leader and ocean science expert to drive the development and delivery of ONC’s Science division. Responsible for ONC’s scientific direction and national and international partnerships, the Director steers ONC in the scientific excellence and innovative thinking necessary to maintain ONC’s leadership at the forefront of ocean observing.</p><p>Reporting to the President &amp; CEO of ONC and as a member of the Executive team, the Director of Science provides strategic, executive, and operational leadership and oversight to the science division. The Science Director provides leadership and direction to a team of staff scientists who bring expertise across many scientific disciplines and serve as the essential interface between the global community of scientific researchers and the ONC observatory infrastructure capabilities. The staff scientists contribute to and support the publication of research results; collaborate directly with internal and external scientists and stakeholders to define data requirements for research projects; advise on uses and data interpretation; plan future initiatives; coordinate workshops; build collaborations; and support research teams in preparing experiments, including but not limited to funding proposals.</p><p><strong>Qualifications</strong></p><p>A visionary leader with a proven record of program development and management, the Director of Science has a Ph.D. in any discipline related to oceanography, marine science, or ocean technology, plus years of relevant experience consistent with a leadership role in either academia, industry, or government.</p><p><strong>Ocean Networks Canada</strong></p><p>ONC operates observatories in the deep ocean, coastal waters and land of the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic coasts of Canada, and in the Antarctic Ocean, delivering data in real-time that accelerates scientific discovery and provides services and solutions for a resilient planet. ONC serves multiple fields of ocean research ranging from geophysics, oceanography, marine acoustics, marine ecology, and geochemistry to microbiology and collaborates with national and local governments, educators, students, communities, and Indigenous peoples. The essential data from thousands of mobile and land-based sensors on ferries, autonomous floats, moorings, and coastal assets enables evidence-based decision-making on ocean management, public safety, and environmental protection, addressing key scientific and policy issues. Diverse user communities utilize ONC’s powerful online data management system, Oceans 3.0, to access, analyze, visualize, and present observatory data.          <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Researcher-in-Residence Program</strong></p><p><strong>APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN</strong></p><p>Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) invites researchers from the global community to apply for residencies of one to 12 months at our Queenswood and Marine Technology Centre locations in Victoria, British Columbia. The Researcher-in-Residence Program aims to foster closer connections between ONC and the research community, and interdisciplinary initiatives.</p><p>Applications are welcome at any time from individuals in any discipline, including the social sciences, to address basic and applied research questions. Selections will be based on research excellence, interdisciplinarity, and relevance of proposed research to ONC research priorities, as outlined in the <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.oceannetworks.ca/about-onc/strategic-plan"><strong>ONC 2030 Strategic Plan</strong></a>. Submissions will be reviewed by ONC <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.oceannetworks.ca/science/science-team"><strong>science staff</strong></a> and members of ONC’s <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.oceannetworks.ca/about-onc/boards-and-council/ocean-observatory-council"><strong>Ocean Observatory Council</strong></a>, their recommendations will be submitted to the ONC Executive for final approval.</p><p><strong>SELECTION CRITERIA</strong></p><p><strong>Research Excellence</strong></p><ul><li><p>Recognized standing and contribution of the applicant in their field of research, as assessed by scholarly contributions and major recognitions.</p></li><li><p>Demonstrated capacity to shape the direction of research.</p></li></ul><p><strong>Interdisciplinary Perspective</strong></p><ul><li><p>Importance of the applicant’s work beyond domain-specific impact, as judged by the breadth of their scholarship across multiple disciplines.</p></li><li><p>Track record of engagement across disciplines and sectors beyond academia.</p></li></ul><p><strong>Quality and Relevance of Proposed Research</strong></p><ul><li><p>Quality of proposed research and other activities while in residence at ONC.</p></li><li><p>Alignment with ONC research priorities and use of ONC infrastructure and/or data.</p></li></ul><p><strong>TERMS</strong></p><p>Residencies are full-time for a minimum of one month and a maximum of 12 months. ONC will provide an equipped workstation as a primary work space and staff support in areas such as data access and processing. There will be an opportunity to interact and work with faculty at the University of Victoria. A fixed monthly allowance of CAD $2,500 to cover lodging and living expenses in the Victoria area is provided to successful applicants, but is not available to residents of Southern Vancouver Island. Reimbursements for travel to and from ONC will not be covered. We anticipate that the successful applicants will receive a letter of invitation within three months of the reception of their application.
