Thomas Jefferson sent Lewis Meriwether (born in Virginia, in 1774) and William Clark (born in Virginia in 1770) to explore the lands on the west side of the Mississippi. During this time, Clark was put in charge of recruiting men to venture with them and he recruited 27 unmarried men to their side which was called the "corps". Clark also brought along a French-Indian interpreter, and his slave named York. During their adventure, they encountered many different Native-American tribes, about 50, but their most known encounter is their encounter with the Mandan and Minitari Indians. They set up camp with them and a week later, built a giant triangle called Fort Mandan and camped with the tribe for 5 more months. While at Fort Mandan they hired a French-Canadian interpreter named Toussaint Charbonneau and also allowed his pregnant wife, Sacagawea, to join them on their journey, she later gave birth to a baby boy named Jean Baptiste Charbonneau.

Thomas Jefferson hired Lewis and Clark to explore the west. It was their job and the job of the corps to find and explore places for the people of the new nation to move west. Along the way they met a lot of people, and tribes. One of the most well known people that joined them on their journey is Sacagawea a native american who helped them and without her they would have gotten nowhere. She became invaluable and an important part of their team.

The current president at that time, Thomas Jefferson, sent his secretary, Lewis Meriwether on the journey to explore the land on the west side of the Mississippi. Lewis then asked his close friend, William Clark, if he would co-command the journey. To get ready, Lewis put Clark in charge of recruiting men for their “Corps of Volunteers for Northwest Discovery,” or "Corps" for short. He ran his training in Camp DuBois on the north side of St. Louis. Clark ended up choosing 27 unmarried men and on May 14, 1804, they set out for their long journey ahead of them. They explored many places that brought the states that we have today, but most of it was ruled by Native American tribes. Lewis and Clark encountered about 50 different tribes, including the Chinook, the Blackfeet, the Mandan, and the Minitari. When they encountered the Mandan and Minitari tribes, however, they set up camp for more than 5 months. During this time they built a giant triangular-shaped fort called Fort Mandan, which contained several storage and quartering rooms. It was also surrounded by 16-foot prickets. A couple of weeks before they set out again, Lewis and Clark hired a French-Canadian interpreter named (). They also allowed his pregnant wife named Sacagawea to join them on their adventure. With the help of Sacagawea, they were able to obtain horses and set camp near Oregon where they were able to build Fort Clatsop until they started the journey home on March 23, 1806.

Lewis and Clark's two year journey was a big success. It was also a big part of westward expansion. During their trip they mapped the rivers maps and mountains, which would help settlers know good places to live and where mountains and water were. it also helped establish trade with the indians, and helped gain their trust and diplomacy.

To start the adventure, both Lewis and Clark were born in Virginia. However, Lewis moved to Georgia at a young age and Clark moved to Kentucky. On July 5, 1803, Lewis obtained a 55-foot custom keelboat to get down Indiana and the Ohio River, and then Clark proceeded to get the journey started as Lewis was gathering more materials for the long trip. In 1803-1804 Clark recruited 27 unmarried men at Camp DuBois in St. Louis, Missouri for their Corps program. On May 14, 1804, the Crops finally joined Lewis and Clark and then they continued north up the Mississippi River. In August of that year, Lewis and Clark helped make Indian Councils near present-day Iowa and South Dakota. In November, Lewis and Clark traveled through North Dakota and encountered the Mandan tribe where they spent 5 months camping. And on April 5, 1805, Lewis and Clark sent some of their men back to St. Louis while the rest of them continued the journey. Then they later traveled through Montana where with the help of Sacaguea, obtained horses and she was reunited with her brother whom she hadn't seen since she was kidnapped. In November 1805, they set camp near Oregon and built Fort Clatsop, and moved in towards Christmas. And finally, on March 23, 1806, Lewis and Clark and the Corps left the Fort and went home.
