There are five stanzas within this poem that mostly focus on one of the weavings that Penelope weaves. The stanzas are continuous and don't have an ending except for stanza 3 and 5, which gives the notion of a more continuous narrative which links toward Penelope having her own story told rather than her husband, Odysseus'. The fact that her story is told in the form of a poem is significant as Odysseus' was told through the form of an epic poem.

The word "saunter" in the second line of the first stanza creates the impression that Odysseus is a very laid back character, who is not rushing back home linking to the fact that he took 20 years to come home. It has negative connotations because she is depicted as a devoted wife, waiting for her husband but he is seemingly unbothered about his lack of presence and returning home.

In stanza three line seven, the use of the alliteration "love, lost, loss, lessons learnt" summarises the story between Penelope and Odysseus in five words. It shows that at this point within the poem, Penelope has come to accept how their lives have turned out thus far and has stopped being fixated on the return of her husband now being able to focus on herself.

The poem has the tone of renewal and the acceptance of oneself. This links with Penelope a character solely present for her husband and in loyalty and devotion to him but as time passes without him she realises that she's finding herself and her own purpose. This is symbolised through her weaving and unpicking every night as through this action she has been able to grow in independence and toward her true self.
