It has negative connotations because she is depicted as a devoted wife, waiting for her husband but he is seemingly unbothered about his lack of presence and returning home.

In stanza three line seven, the use of the alliteration "love, lost, loss, lessons learnt" summarises the story between Penelope and Odysseus in five words. It shows that at this point within the poem, Penelope has come to accept how their lives have turned out thus far and has stopped being fixated on the return of her husband now being able to focus on herself.

This links with Penelope a character solely present for her husband and in loyalty and devotion to him but as time passes without him she realises that she's finding herself and her own purpose. This is symbolised through her weaving and unpicking every night as through this action she has been able to grow in independence and toward her true self.
