After the king declared Massachusetts to be in open rebellion, he sent a force to take the supplies and weapons stationed in Concord. The British met the first resistance force at Lexington and easily defeated them, and the minutemen had to fall back. However, when the redcoats got to Concord, they failed to locate many arms because the majority had been relocated. A more significant militia force then confronted them. As the British fell back to Boston, they were repeatedly ambushed and attacked by the smaller forces of colonial soldiers.
Significance: This was the first Battles of the revolution and set the stage for an actual war - The British had all the odds but the patriots could inflict some damage.

The 1000 or so militiamen fortified Breed's Hill (even though the battle is called the Battle of Bunker Hill) and prepared for battle. Over 2000 British soldiers in formation marched up the hill in lines and were gunned down TWICE by the minutemen, inflicting heavy casualties. However, on the third assault up the hill, the colonists ran out of ammunition and were forced to give up the hill.
Significance: The Redcoats won the battle, but had 3 times as many casualties. By mid-December, the General realized without a decisive victory his army would be doomed. He crossed the icy Delaware and began his march to Trenton, a town where a garrison of Hessians were camped. He caught them completely off guard, early in the morning, and the Hessians quickly surrendered.
Significance: This Battle was the moral boost that got the Continental Army to hold on for winter. One of the armies was marching from Canada under General Burgoyne, and he was confronted by General Gates who built defenses on top of Bemis Heights. the two armies fought ferocity but in the end, the British, who dug into trenches to await reinforcements, surrendered when the reinforcements did not arrive.
Significance: This was a crushing defeat to the British and convinced France to join the war on the side of the Americans.

The Colonial army decimated the British, with 800 casualties to 100. this battle showed a wonderful display of maneuvering on the Americans' part and the usefulness of the rifle.
Significance: This battle ended the British campaign in the American South and was one of the crucial defeats leading to the final battle of the war in Yorktown.
