We begin with building an understanding of germs and how they spread. Through science, we conduct experiments to show how germs spread. This bread experiment is very visual and draws a connection between germs/bacteria and hand hygiene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNjr3F8NYXg. Next, we use the scientific method to reflect on the experiment. Critical thinking skills be developed.

Next we turn our attention to what we can do to limit the spread of germs. Depending on individual student interest, some may decide to to engineer contraptions which could help with this aim in our class, or across the school and beyond. This will require students to collaborate, and also think critically and creatively. Other students may decide on how best to communicate what we have learned to others. This may take the form of producing informative posters, texts, videos, songs, plays, etc. This will require students to be creative and consider what it takes to communicate effectively - all in all, the students will be applying critical thinking skills at all stages.

Description of the evaluation Process

The evaluation process will be ongoing through regular formative assessments which will help to assess where the students are and how they can be more supported/extended. A rubric will be designed around the objectives identified to help focus the formative assessments, and also to give clarity to the summative assessment (which will be a final evaluation based on the finished project).

At certain points during the project, we will have mini-feedback sessions where peers will give constructive criticism. Prior to these sessions, the students will need to be explicitly taught how to give constructive feedback, and how to assimilate feedback into their project designs. Students will then be expected to incorporate some of this feedback into their project.

Finally, we reflect on what we have learned through this project. We will talk about how we can effect change by studying real-world problems, coming up with solutions and designing/communicating these solutions.
