By far the most important holiday in Egypt is Ramadan. The holiday is named for the month of the Islamic calendar in which it occurs as a celebration of the first part of the revelation of the Qur’an to the Prophet Mohammed. Most Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. The fast can have an effect on schedules with restaurants and shops staying closed during the middle of the day and opening after the fast is broken at sundown. They use this time to focus on ones inner self and step away from pleasures. Before the fast, Muslims have a pre-dawn meal of power foods to get them through the day. Ramadan will occur this year on May 15 and last until June 14.

Egyptians will always greet you with a smile and a gracious inquiry as to your health. It is inappropriate to touch a women in public, but men are often seen holding hands, with arms wrapped around each other or kissing each other on the cheek in greeting. Women are not required to wear a head scarf, but are required to dress conservatively. Weddings in Egypt are mostly arranged through a contract of the groom and the brides parents. Wealthier families spend more by getting a ballroom and are spread out for several days. Divorce is not very common but normally the father gets custody and the dowry must be returned.

Since the fall of Hosni Mubarak in 2011, Egypt has experienced a fall in both foreign investment and tourism. For most Egyptians, rising food prices caused the most problems. The pound's devaluation has also made it harder to get fuel. The state has stopped getting diesel since the dictatorship of Gamal Abdel Nasser. Mohamed Morsi's Islamist-led government had kept Egypt afloat with short-term measures. Later that year, General Abdel-Fatah al-Sisi became president and has since then risen the economy.

Typical Egyptian dishes include aish, aish baladi, baba Ghanoush, basbousa, and many more. Lunch is normally served between 1 and 4pm while dinner is usually from 8pm to midnight. Aish is the Egyptian traditional pocket bread similar to pita bread. It is made by mixing wheat flour, water and salt then baked and Aish baladi is wheat bread. Baba Ghanoush is made from grilled eggplant that is peeled then mashed and mixed with tahini (see below), lemon juice, salt, pepper, parsley, cumin and dressed with olive oil. This dip has a smoky flavor and is best served with pita bread. Basbousa is a sweet semolina cake which is soaked in a syrup that has a floral scent (made from rose water and sometimes lemon and honey). These are just to name a few.

It is also referred to as "The Gate Way to the Afterlife". The Ancient Egyptians built this for their Pharaohs on the Nile's west bank near Luxor. Purposefully built in the middle of the desert to scare away thieves, most of the graves were robbed in ancient times, but the tombs that remain still offer important clues to the past. Not all the tombs were robbed though; this is where Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922, complete with its riches and new tombs are still being located today.
