Peaking at 300 million users in the mid 2010s, Skype was once a huge video chat and communication platform. Just 2 years after its founding in 2003, Skype had reached 100 million active users by 2005. It revolutionized communication by allowing voice and video calls over the internet. The app's simplicity turned it into a household name. Although Skype had a huge start, when WhatsApp, FaceTime, and later Zoom were introduced to the communication world, Skype began to fall off. Due to its failure to adapt, people began moving over from Skype to those new services, as they provided safer communication (end to end encryption). In 2023, Microsoft officially shut down Skype becuase it had been overshadowded by Microsoft Teams. Being one of the first forms of video chat, Skype left a warm spot in the heart of many previous users.
