Grasslands are located in the Great Plains area of the United states. There are a few in Oregon, California, and Idaho. Those are the only three not in the Great Plains. The grasslands cover 10 states Montana, North and south Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico,Kansas, Oklahoma, Wyoming, and Texas. Millions of acres are used for farming and housing. There is not enough rainfall to support tree growth. Grasslands have the most fertile soil in the world. Organic material decays slower than new vegetation can grow.

Most animals here are herbivores because of the fields of grass. Animals like elk, deer, prong horns, prairie dogs, and bison thrive here. There are a few carnivores like hawks, eagles, badgers, and foxes that eat the herbivores.
The prairie dogs burrow under ground to avoid the hot days and to stay safe from predators. They are herbivores who eat the grasses and any other plants they can find.
Eagles fly slowly over the land and look for small animals to prey on. They have long wing spans which allows them to glide for long periods of time as well as very good eye sight. They catch small animals like the prairie dogs and eat them.

Smaller plants like grasses and shrubs grow more.Grasses can grow up to ten feet tall.Trees may grow closer to river banks for water because there is little rainfall. They have to survive fires caused from lightening strikes. The large amount of grasses and small plants feed the animals. The soil is very fertile but the lack of rain prevents much growth.
Grasses use their long roots to reach water. It also allows them to regrow after a fire.
Trees grow closer to river banks to access water. their bark is thick to hold water and survive fires.
