In a feudal society like Japan, land ownership meant power. The shogun, his relatives and the inner daimyo controlled the regions of strategic importance of Japan, while less important areas were left to the outer daimyo. This naturally made the outer daimyo resentful towards the shogun, who was equally distrustful of them.

By far the largest group in the population was the peasants, who were legally bound to work on the land of their daimyo. At the bottom of the society were the chonin. This group included craftspeople, artisans, and merchants. Business and money lending was not thought of as a noble pursuit, but the wealth and influence of those in this group increased during the Edo period, when new business opportunities arose due to the large numbers of travelling society.
