3. No because just because you don't like it doesn't mean we should ban it. Their could be very important pieces of information or important historical events that could be lost because your feeling got hurt reading it.
5. None after the 8th grade. It is important for these children to learn the truth about America and all the horrors committed here in globally. After that grade teens become more mature and are able to handle the issues being talk about in class. But in elementary school and even before 8th grade I can see why their could be parents stepping in. Here children are still young and innocent and their brains have not developed enough for them to understand the issues that are being talked about.

1) Some reasons as to why a school board might choose to remove certain books from school are if the book is too graphic and could potentially evoke some negative emotions. An example given was a Holocaust memoir and a LGBTQ classic which those who are conservative might not approve of.
3) Books shouldn't be banned based on how it makes people feel. Everyone has a different genre of books they enjoy, some more graphic and gory and others mild and fantasy-wise. If a book does not appeal to someone, then they don't have to read that book and no one is going to force them to. It's based purely on someone's choice and theirs alone. To proceed with censorship caused by personal feelings, the book could be have a warning about what the reader should expect and what age range should be allowed to read it as the book might be important, history-wise or in general.

I agree with your points, especially the main claim that you can't ban something just because you don't like it and the fact that as students advance in grade levels, they grow more mature as well, so they would be able to handle the more sensitive topics. With the ban/limiting during K-5, I can see that working as students in those grades are just learning the main basics, etc, and with less maturity it would make sense to withhold some of the sensitive books, but the main issue then would be what classified as sensitive.

To me, I would definitely say that censorship within the last decade has gotten more stringent. Even if they didn't do book burnings (which more conservative groups do), there's still the matter of what they target and how much of it is targeted, both of which have increased as authors begin to share their stories.

To me, the most important quality about these books that are being banned is the factor of what books are being banned and (most often than not) the reasoning for why. Both of these factors point to a bigger narrative which I think is really important to look at.

While I agree, those are some of the reasons that groups have used or looked at, I don't think that those should count as valid reasons due to the fact that more often than not, negative feelings can lead to growth, understanding, empathy, all of which benefit the students in the long run.

I also agree that books shouldn't be banned on how they make an individual feel. Just like you said, you don't have to read the book (unless it's school curriculum but that situation changes based on the book; maybe an updated curriculum is needed). I think it would be a good idea to have a rating system or warning labels for more graphic stuff, like we do for CDs and Movies, though.
