How does one “know” something in this way of knowing?

Our emotions are crucial when it comes to the challenges of daily life. They help us to have intuition, which is when you feel as though something is wrong even if you're not sure what (Ishak 2017). The problem with our emotions is that often you will feel one or more emotions or even confuse one for another, like love and lust. With emotions like happiness and sadness it is easy to decipher what they are trying to tell you about a certain subject as they can heavily effect your mental state and even how you're feeling physically. Sometimes you won't be able to figure out what emotion you are feeling, whether it be because you've never felt it before or because you're "experiencing disassociation [which is the] total detachment from your feelings" (Seltzer 2017). We are able to know something due to emotion because of the strong physical and mental toll our emotions can have on us, as these tolls help us to realize what is good for us and what is bad. Although sometimes it is tricky to be able to pin down exactly what emotion you're feeling, which could lead to false conclusions.

How is this considered knowledge and not belief?

We know emotion is knowledge and not belief because of how negative emotions can cause us physical pain and loss of motivation and positive emotions can cause us to feel physically well. Feeling belief is an emotion itself, so how could all emotions be a belief if belief is an emotion itself? Emotions are able to provide us with the energy and motivation needed during our life long search for more knowledge and have even lead to scientific discoveries since our emotions can be rational and lead us to follow our intuition (Langston n.d)
Image from: alamy.com

Our personal experiences are where the authority of emotion comes from. An example of this is how many children felt disgust when eating broccoli and gained the knowledge that whenever their parents would make it that they would have to feel that disgust again. Our emotions towards certain people, places and things will definitely differ from those around us and even individuals that we will never meet but nonetheless each person has had a personal experience that has formed our knowledge on what things we enjoy and which things we don't.

Is this way of knowing rational or empirical?

Emotion can be both rational or empirical. It can be empirical in the way that your personal experiences can shape your emotions, and resulting in knowledge of what that experience made you feel. Say you chose to experiment with an outfit that was way out of your comfort zone and after seeing how you looked and how you felt in the outfit, you were able to come out of that experience with the knowledge that you either really liked going out of your comfort zone or that you absolutely hated it. This is an example of how emotion can be empirical, since you gained knowledge through your experimenting with outfits and how it made you feel. Emotion can be rational because our emotional and intellectual mechanisms work together and sustain one another, as a decision based on intuition may be better than one that has been made after a lot of research (Winter 2015). Our emotions can lead us to making rational decisions, like knowing how terrible it feels to hand in an assignment late so it would be better to finish it early.
Image from: shutterstock.com

Is truth absolute or relative in this way of knowing?

Truth is relative in this way of knowing since emotion itself is relative. There is no absolute truth to what our emotions have lead us to feel and know about our nature. Emotions are both universal and not at the same time, most people in the world will experience an emotion in the same way but the reason they are feeling the emotion is completely relative. Our emotions towards people, places and things are all dependent on our personal experiences, resulting in the truth being completely relative. Since we all have different reasons for feeling happiness and sadness, people are able to have different stand points on what is morally correct and what is not. The truth on whether or not this video is unnerving or beautiful is completely relative and many will have their own truth.

Famous philosophers like Plato believe that emotion is crucial in human life. It's as important as knowledge and desire. Most philosophers and knowledge seekers believe that in order to understand your true self you must be able to connect with your emotions and learn from those experiences, another quote about this is "to live well, we cannot run from our feelings but instead we must learn how to integrate them into our life and let them guide us". These quotes all show how many philosophers and knowledge seekers, even Plato himself, have the belief that emotion is a key in human behaviour and one must be able to learn everything from their emotions before they can become great.

Do you consider this way of knowing a “valid” form of knowing and reaching the truth?

I have conflicting feelings when it comes to emotion being a valid form of knowing and reaching the truth. Although I know our positive emotions can lead us to making really good decisions and lead us to live happier lives, but our negative ones can cause us to act impulsively and even lash out at people. I think its important to be able to listen to what your emotions are telling you and sometimes it is better to listen to your heart rather than your head when it comes to some subjects, but with other more serious situations or problems it is probably best to figure out more details before acting impulsively. I believe emotion invalid in coming up with a universal truth, but it is a valid way to come up with a personal truth. Since emotion is based on personal experiences, the truth and knowledge you have obtained from your emotions could be completely different than someone else's. An example of this is how some people have the belief that everything happens for a reason and all of the bad things in life are learning experiences and you will gain knowledge from them, while others experience the bad things in life and chose to be negative and hateful. Emotion is all relative to the individual and because of that it is valid in finding truth and gaining knowledge in a small scale but not a large one.
