The Day You Begin is a book about starting school and getting to know your classmates.  At first, it may seem that you all have nothing in common, but as you begin to open up you realize that you all have a lot in common.  I love this book because almost everyone is nervous the first day of school or in a new class.  The Day You Begin encourages us to open up to those around us and we'll find out we aren't that different after all.

The Day the Crayons Quit is one of my favorite kids books.  The story is about Duncan's crayons.  All the crayons wrote Duncan a letter about their mistreatment.  They quit!  When Duncan went to color he found all of the letters and read each one.  The Day the Crayons Quit is a great book to encourage small children to take care of their crayons and explore new ways to use them.

Hey, Little Ant is about an ant that pleads it's case not to be squished by a little boy.  But like most little boys he doesn't see the harm in squishing an ant.  Ants don't have feelings or so he thought.  I recommend this book because it teaches us to look at things from a different prospective than our own.

Not Norman is a cute book about a little boy that gets a goldfish as a pet.  The only problem is he didn't want a goldfish.  He decides to take his fish to show and tell at school to trade for a "good pet."  In the end he falls in love with Norman. I like this book because it teaches children to be nonjudgemental.

How awesome would it be to fly like an eagle?  In this story it wasn't so nice for Ikarus who was a young boy born with wings.   When he arrived at his new school everyone teased him except for  a young girl that came to his defense.  She told him how beautiful his wings were and wondered awesome it must be to fly.  This book teaches friendship and embracing your uniqueness.

Life was great until Jeremy Ross moved down the street.  The young boy's father had a plan...Enemy Pie!  In order to serve Jeremy Ross enemy pie  the young boy had to play with him for an entire day. The Boy on Fairfield Street is about the famous Ted Geisel commonly known as Dr. Seuss.  Ted loved to draw but only took one art class in high school.  He was kicked out of art class for not following the rules, but that didn't stop his desire to draw.  After attending Darmouth he moved to New York to pursue his artistic dreams.  Now we all love the illustrations of the famous Dr. Seuss.  I like this book because it teaches children to follow their dreams even when others can't see their vision.

The Hunger Games series is futuristic and believable with today's political climate. The Hunger Games is set in apocalyptic North America. This novel is about children, one boy and one girl, being drafted to fight for their district in order to receive the basic necessities such as food.  The main character Katniss decides to sacrifice herself when her younger sister is chosen in the draft.  Peter is chosen as her partner and they develop a serious bond throughout the series.

This book provides a guide for students to be successful and keep a positive mind set.  The 7 habits promote self awareness and encourage students to prioritize their daily activity,  think before they make the next move, how to seek understanding, and then how to ensure you're understood.  I think this is an excellent book for preteens but recommend that parents have these conversation with their children as early as elementary school.
This book is recommended as an independent read for students 12 and above.

Set in futuristic Chicago the city is divided into 5 factions.  At the age of 16 children are allowed to remain in the faction they were born into or transfer to another faction. The main character, Beatrice Prior, has to make a decision whether she should stay  in the faction with her family where she feels she doesn't belong or separate from them by moving to a different faction.  There are several surprising twists in the book including a blossoming romance.
