This quote shows his mental health not being in a great state as he has this feeling of loneliness and depression and wants to talk to somebody but doesn't have anyone to call.

In chapter 9, Holden deals with lots of sexual fantasies and wants to get intimate with a girl but at the same time he is innocent in a way that he sex as dirty and feels guilty about idea of sex when analyzed. Even thought he refers to himself as the "biggest sex maniac" he doesn't want to grow up and instead he fights for his innocence.

Holden feels very isolated because he has been by himself since he left his school. He wants to talk to somebody so he contemplates calling his little sister.

This is one example of the many lies Holden tells. He lies to buy liquor underage while he is in the Lavender Room, but the waiter refuses to serve him because he doesn't have an ID.

Ernie ("big fat colored guy that plays the piano. He's a terrific snob and he won't hardly even talk to you unless you're a big shot or celebrity or something, but he can really play the piano. He's so good it's almost corny..." 90)

When talking about Jane putting her hand behind his neck, he mentions how it's different when she does it because she is young and pure. If she were older and less innocent, what she did would be viewed differently, showing that her youngness and innocence is what pulls him into her.

He supposedly follows the rules, but he just lies to cover up.

Holden was stuck isolated in the dorms with only kids his age and he was barely able to go out and live life.

a magazine, even, and somebody asks me where I'm going, I'm liable to say I'm going to the

opera. It's terrible. So when I told old Spencer I had to go to the gym and get my equipment and

stuff, that was a sheer lie. I don't even keep my goddam equipment in the gym." (19).

This shows Holden acknowledges his lying, and even he realizes that it's a bad habit of his.

"I slept in the garage the night he died, and I broke all the goddam windows with my fist, just for the hell of it. I even tried to break all the windows on the station wagon we had that summer, but my hand was already broken and everything by that time, and I couldn't do it" (44).

This shows how Allie's death truly affected Holden, and proves how depressed and lonely he felt afterwards.

This shows that he chooses exactly what he wants to when he wants to and does not want to conform to politeness necessarily.

"Just to stop lying. Once I get started, I can go on for hours if I feel like it." (58)

This shows that he rebels by becoming a pathological liar and lying whenever he chooses.
