Atticus is talking about defending Tom Robinson and Scout is over hearing the conversation all around Maycomb, but the things that shes overhearing are all negative. While answering Scout's questions he explains how he knows he will not win, but is still putting in effort, "simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win" (Lee 101). This reveals the lesson of having moral integrity, doing what is right even if you know you won't succeed. Atticus wants to teach Scout to never do something morally unjust for the sake of winning.

Atticus gives him advice, attempting to relax his nerves on the incident. "'You'll understand folks a little better when you're older. A mob's always made up of people, no matter what. Mr. Cunningham was part of a mob last night, but he was still a man,'" (Lee 210). Atticus is advising Jem to treat everyone with respect and be humane with them, no matter their actions. Explaining to Jem that everyone is deeply a good person, no matter what they do, and implying that everyone is human, and everyone feels the same feelings.

In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus gives Scout advice as she tells him the belief that she'll never get along with anybody, "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it," (Lee, 39). This piece of text shows that despite what the outside may seem, or show, you'll never really know what a person is like on the inside no matter how hard you try.

After the Finch family returns from the jail when they were swarmed by a violent mob that Scout's innocence was able to stop, the Finch family began discussing the events and why they came to be. Atticus, in an attempt to reflect on why Scout's words were as impactful as they were, said "That proves something - that a gang of wild animals can be stopped, simply because they're still human" (Lee 210). Through this, Atticus is showing his kids to never undermine a person's humanity just because of how they present their opinions.

After Jem returns from reading to Mrs. Dubose following her insults, Atticus reveals that she was fighting a morphine addiction and explains Jem why he made her read, saying "I wanted you to see something about her --- I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you being anyway and you see it through no matter what" (Lee 115). Basically, Atticus is teaching Jem that real courage is doing something despite how difficult the situation is. He expects Jem to do what's right because it is right, not because you are winning.

After seeing Scouts behavior on the subject, Atticus offers some advice, " You can never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view-- until you climb into his skin and walk around in it," (Lee 30).

After the incident with the Mobs at the jail, including Mr. Cunningham, the children confront Atticus. They insist that the Mobs could have killed Atticus and ask why he doesn't think much of it, calling it a blind spot. This leads to Atticus giving the children essential advice, "'He might have hurt me a little,” Atticus conceded, “but son, you’ll understand

folks a little better when you’re older. A mob’s always made up of people, no

matter what. Mr. Cunningham was part of a mob last night, but he was still a man.

Every mob in every little Southern town is always made up of people you know—

doesn’t say much for them, does it?'" (Lee 159). Here, Atticus advises them to treat individuals with empathy and respect, no matter how bad they might appear. He lets them know that Mr. Cunningham is a "good" individual, however, the mob group influenced him to negatively act. This helps them understand empathy and the importance of trying to understand others.
