Fahrenheit 451: The Burning of American Culture

Ray Bradbury’s writing has represented many things, but one in particular is freedom, as it is a key aspect of the American Dream. One of Ray’s works, Fahrenheit 451, was a story based on the burning of knowledge and to keep that knowledge within the hierarchy. David Fox’s essay, Fahrenheit 451: The Burning of American Culture, claims many different ideas from the novel. Fox claims, “Fahrenheit 451 helped to throw the dehumanizing Communist witch-hunts back in the face of overzealous patriots by painting a world that had been extrapolated out with leaders like Joseph McCarthy.” (Fox 31).Fox’s take on how Fahrenheit 451 demonstrates the American Dream is by contradicting the idea of communism. In the novel, the idea is based on the burning of books symbolizing the burning of knowledge. This idea correlates with communism as one of its aspects being that all are equal. By doing this, the claim downgrades communism, stating its negative aspect. When Fox uses words like “de-humanizing”, communism is viewed as a burden to society and how society shouldn’t be. This clearly demonstrates how Bradbury supports the American Dream because by confronting the idea of communism showing a negative portrayal, it demonstrates ideas like opportunity and freedom to avoid the idea of communism like the Red Scare. Therefore, developing ideas and emotions like these, there is a clear correlation between these aspects and the American Dream.

The Interview with Jean W. Ross and Ray Bradbury

Not only does Bradbury support the American Dream, but Bradbury also experienced the American Dream by living it. Ray had an interview about his life overall. Ray summarized how useless the American education system was but how literature was a new path (Ray Bradbury, Interview). A new path to explore, expand, and take advantage of. Bradbury uses this as an opportunity, chasing new dreams in the literature world. One of the key aspects of the American Dream is opportunity. Opportunity in the sense to be able to succeed and excel here in America. Therefore, Ray Bradbury does support the American Dream because not only did this writer live it, but the American Dream allowed for the legacy of this writer to where it stands today.

Ray Bradbury’s life and legacy has been very influential and impactful. Here’s a take by two reviewers of Ray Bradbury’s overall works and how the amazing writer influences society. One reviewer stated, “To pin the bright moment with passion and significance, yet link it by the power of suggestion with all that went before and comes after and is not said, to touch the heart and the imagination and open in brief a whole world of experience” (Stevie Smith). The reviewer brings out key qualities on Bradbury’s writing and how it effectively impacts society. This represents how Ray supports the American Dream as it is a feeling of emotions that are the building blocks of the American Dream.
