Electric toothbrushes can help people with limited motor skills brush their teeth. A person does not need to move their arm in circular motions, back and forth, all while gripping onto the toothbrush. This electric toothbrush is easier to hold and solves the complex task of brushing teeth, which could be challenging for people who are not as able to use their fine motor skills. It allows all people to brush their teeth efficiently and quickly, saving time and keeping teeth cleaner! Yay for universal design!

Something I was thinking about in terms of universal design is the idea of what are (sometimes derisively called) "trigger warnings" -- text or announcements placed before media that are meant to make audiences aware of potentially disturbing content. This isn't a new concept, as warnings of graphic violence or nudity, etc. have appeared in front of movie previews or TV shows for as long as I remember. Including "trigger warnings" in front of short stories, or plays, or museum exhibits has clear benefits for protecting the mental health of people who have PTSD or who have experienced extremely traumatic events, or just helping parents gauge the appropriateness of a movie or exhibit for their children. I realize this veers away from the straightforward idea of Universal Design in architecture, but when I read a content warning ahead of a play recently I thought of the concept and how it can be applied not just to the physical spaces wherein we present art or artifacts, but also the ideological design of exhibits. I see content warnings as directly related to the idea of Universal Design, in that they help to make access and appreciation as simple and straightforward as possible.

In the lounges at Catlett, there are outlets on the walls right by the tables/chairs that people use to work on homework. This is an example of universal design because having the outlets close by to where people work means easier access to plugging in technology, as compared to if the outlet was on the floor like I often see in libraries. If it was on the floor, those with bad knees or inability to move would struggle because they would have to get on the floor. Also, if the outlet was far away from the tables, those with short chargers couldn't charge their laptop without moving the entire table/their homework set up space. Plus that would just be hazardous because a cable would be lying across the middle of the floor.

As an elementary education major I am learning how to implement universal design into my future lessons. One way we do this is by adding captions to any pictures that we post on websites or slideshows. That way someone can move their mouse over the image and see a written description of it or listen to it read. This especially helps people with poor vision but can also be beneficial for people who prefer to read or may not understand the picture.

Throughout the campus of Iowa, in every building with multiple floors there is always at least one elevator. This feature is essential for disabled people and there lives would not be the same without this technology.
