ECON Project with prof. Larisa Ray: Fall 2018 Macroeconomics W 6:30 by Larisa Ray

One of the most important goals of teaching economics is to teach students to THINK how to deal with real world economic problems. Despite the fact that there is no universal definition of critical thinking, we can use a statement of Michael Scriven & Richard Paul (1987) and identify this as an intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action.
We believed that critical thinking involves identifying, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating information to yield actionable knowledge to make effective decisions (Argyris, 1996; Giancarlo & Facione, 2001; Liuetal., 2011; Scriven & Paul, 2005).

The development of critical thinking skills in economics class, with a specific focus on collaborative learning (ECON Project) designed to increase student communication, engagement, and collaboration.

If technology within businesses continues to advance, unemployment will rise.
To many, technological advancement is seen as a positive economic factor that can only help the economy and increase production. However, it seems that as technological advance increases, so does the amount of technology replacing humans in the workforce. David Autor, an MIT Economist, claims "we're losing higher-skill, better paying jobs to machines" (Arnold). A few jobs that, according to David Autor, are being taken include "bank tellers, airline check-in agents, [and] accountants..." (Arnold). An example of this human replacement can even be witnessed at the local Target or Walmart. As customers line up at the convenient self-checkout machines, there is less of a need for cashier lines to remain open. In other words, these machines are replacing the jobs of human cashiers. Therefore, I believe that as technological advancement within businesses increases, unemployment will rise

The biggest US economic problem would undoubtedly have to be the national debt. As of now the United States national debt stands at a whopping $20.6 trillion dollars. China owns $1.2 trillion dollars of the U.S. debt with Japan trailing as a close second with $1.1 trillion dollars and Ireland comes in third holding 329 billion. The biggest issue with this debt is that it only seems to be growing and the government is not doing much to pay it back. In 1989 the U.S national debt was at $2.7 trillion. In 2008 it increased to $10 trillion. In 2010 it grew to $16 trillion. Over this thirty year span the numbers keep getting bigger and bigger. There are ways to help reduce the debt such as cutting spending, raising taxes, or driving economic growth at a faster rate

China’s largest trading partner. China owns more than $1 trillion of U.S. government bonds. Which some worry gives Beijing influence over the U.S, economy. The overall trade deficit reflects the fact that the U.S. spends more than its produces, requiring U.S, to obtain the difference through net imports. But if China sold U.S. bonds in bulk, it would hurt China, because that would reduce the value of an asset China holds a lot of, and it would have to switch to other less liquid foreign bonds markets. Lowering the value of the yuan would help exports by making Chinese goods cheaper for other countries to import. Consumer spending drives 70 percent of the economy of U.S. corporate experience in the domestic market create a competitive advantage in the global market.

If Walmart sets its minimum wage at $5 an hour and no one applies, Walmart will raise its hourly wage. With a forced minimum wage of $15 for example, Walmart may only hire one person instead of two at $7.50. This can lead to less jobs and higher prices at Walmart. Raising minimum wage at some point will lead to inflation and slower job creation. The United States does not benefit from having poor workers, but raising the minimum wage is not going to fix that problem. The purpose of minimum wages are to increase business profit, increase employee wages, increase business efficiency, and to make workers more inclined to do legal work. Business profit is increased because what would be very low waged frivolous jobs are outsourced. Employee wages are increased because corporations cannot save as much money and are instead forced to pay employees more. Business become more efficient because of higher labor costs. Finally workers are more inclined to legal work when it pays more. That's the purpose of minimum wage, not to decrease poverty levels. Therefore unnecessarily raising minimum wage will lead to lost jobs, higher prices, and fewer hours of work for employees.

A rising economic issue is minimum wage. People are either for or against raising the minimum wage. Some good things that could come with this is that peoples lively hood would be increased which increases the satisfaction of the workers. But for the pay that the one person would be getting you could actually hire two workers. So amount of jobs would decrease. Over all minimum wage jobs are for experience and not for providing for your family.

The biggest economic problem for the U.S. economy is debt. I believe debt is the biggest economic problem for the US because it effects the economy and people as a whole. The U.S. debt is greater than what the U.S. produces in a whole year. The U.S. debt also effects greatly the younger people of this generation and if we do not attempt to lower the debt now, we will receive greater consequences in the future. These consequences can lead to our retirement plans, minimum wage issues, and also government spending issues such as our medical insurance, taxes, and etc. There are also two types of debt the good and the bad, and what the U.S. is experiencing right now is the bad debt. The U.S. is currently is debt of $21 trillion dollars as of March 15, 2018 and it is only rising from there based on the U.S. Nation Debt Clock.

Banking, Investing and Saving

Malignant Financial Institutions aka “too-big-to-fail” banks are what . A bank is considered ‘too big to fail’ when its assets and holdings become so large that a shock to said institution would damage the economy as a whole and possibly bring everyone down with it; therefore, the U.S. government whether prudent or not, must bail out these banks to protect the economy, all at the expense of the tax payer. That’s not to say that the banks themselves are bad, simply that they are using money that doesn’t belong to them. In 1933 the Glass-Steagal Act was passed that separated banks into two categories (a single bank could split their assets in two, thus achieving the same goal), the first being commercial and the second being investment. Commercial banks are used for individuals looking to simply save up money and build a retirement or emergency nest egg, as well as for small businesses. Investment banks are for large corporations that need much larger investments as well as for Wall Street stock investments. In 1999, this Act was repealed and allowed for banks to use their customers saving accounts for investments on the stock exchange. It has been argued that such instability led to the Financial Crisis of 2008, but that is not the content of this paper. This is simply to highlight the gross misuse of individual saving accounts for the greed and gain of bankers at the expense of the people they claim to work for.
To solve this Economic Problem I would propose the reinstatement of the Glass-Steagal Act of 1933 to build a firm barrier between the two aspects of banking, investing and saving...

It is a concern in almost all countries around the world and often people are trapped in poverty with little chance to climb up the social ladder. Education, at all levels, enhancing skills, and training policies can be used alongside social assistance programs to help people out of poverty and to reduce inequality.
