commonsense.org/education

*To access tool reviews go to EdTech Reviews tab located on link.

The information found at this link provides reviews on thousands of educational technology tools from educational stakeholders in a rigorous, unbiased, research-based manner. Reviews found here are more detailed than other app reviews (i.e. Google Play, Apple, etc.) as they do not allow company entities to review. The webinar host shared they are dedicated to "giving educators reviews they can trust from educators themselves". Reviewers use a rubric to score in three categories which are then used to develop a final rating for each tool. Go to website to read editorial reviews and select appropriate tools to enhance your classroom instruction. Important to note, the safety, privacy, security, and compliance are reviewed by a team (including lawyers) and given one of three ratings (red to blue). All tools included on the list (see link) have received a “passing” blue permitting an educator to feel more confident about safely implementing a selected tool in the classroom. Some of my favorites that were discussed, and I am excited to try in my own instruction include:

Adobe Spark

Google CS First

Common Lit

Book Creator

EPIC!

ThinkCERCA

My webinar was about the unwritten social rules of Social Media and how each student is affected. If teachers want to warn against the "dangers" of social media, it cannot be fear-based. Studies have shown that Instagram is the most negative social media app for students in regards to body image, meanwhile Youtube is the most positive. There are many hidden rules about social media that adults should learn about if they want to get to know their students more.

It focused almost solely on Twitter and how some schools are/were using Twitter. I am very curious who they would have running/regulating a school account and how they dealt with problems that arise. It was not terribly helpful, but I'm sure it would be insightful for some teachers that have never used Twitter. It also has some good info on links to districts that have social media guidelines so you can at least go check out what some of the districts around the country are saying.

RIverside and Orange County school districts have 900K students participating in E-Sports. Their main goals are to build student engagement and leadership, as well as get previously disenfranchised students to be accepted and in some cases, celebrated. The mission for E-Sports in K-12 schools is to get students interested in STEM programs and show interest in learning and as a result, be skilled and thrive after high school. Colleges are also dishing out $100 million in scholarships for E-Sports in 2020.

Fun facts: E-Sports is projected to bring in a revenue of over 3 billion dollars by 2022, and has already surpassed Major League Baseball in total viewership.

Some school are using Digital Citizenship to promote social and emotional learning. Some districts want to create a change in their school culture and teach their students about kindness. Change begins with administrators and teachers. Teachers must create an environment with kindness so it could be modeled by students. School administrators must also support teachers to promote a school wide change. In order to create a change in school culture we must bring awareness, be persistent, and we must immerse ourselves. The question to is, how do we cultivate kindness using digital citizenship. The students will use digital citizenship lessons and activities. One main concern that these districts want to tackle and educate students is cyber-bullying. By using these platforms the students can learn to build relationships and communicate using kindness. Students can use lessons and activities that will teach them how to properly communicate on social media.
