Community trail

Something that I didn't notice when I went to this neighborhood before hand was this paved trail. It replaced what used to be a canal and it goes all the way through the neighborhood with multiple entrance/exit points. I walked by quite a few old folks and chatted with them to find out if they were from the neighborhood. They told me it's been a great use of the canal and it makes it easier for them to want to get out of the house because the trail is just down the street.

Education

This is a middle school in the area which is kept pretty up to date and is well taken care of. Having a middle school in this area makes us aware of educational opportunities and community engagement that takes place within this neighborhood. Having a school is a great asset for community identity, social and recreational opportunities.

Connecting bridge

Because I chose the neighborhood on both sides of the busy main road, I noticed this bridge that was built above the street. This allows for safer travel as the children are walking to middle school from the surrounding areas. It also allows for a less congested/hazardous drop off and pick up of the students. The area at the middle school is quite small and there isn't a very orderly and safe way for parents to drop off their kids. Because this bridge connects to the parking lot of the Sandy library, there's more room for parents and they can avoid dealing with the traffic of early morning and afternoon.

Park

This is the community park. It's a great, convenient place for soccer and baseball practice. There are a few pickle ball courts as well. While I was there I saw two kids with their dad using the dirt from the baseball diamond to drive around a remote control truck. They were having a blast. It's strategically placed in the middle of the neighborhood allowing access for many individuals and it's a great way to get people outside and more active.

Library

I really liked that there was a city library located in this particular area. I feel like the library is a lost art because not a lot of people spend much time here anymore. We all have access to electronic books now and we don't hold physical books as much anymore. I think it's awesome that this was placed where the majority age group ranges from 5-13. When I walked in I observed that it was mainly parents brining their kids to pick out some books to check out or kids just hanging out in the comfy area reading.

Unlike the last neighborhood mapping assignment we had, it was a lot easier for me to find assets over what's 'wrong' with the neighborhood. You realize how beneficial an area is when observing the positive things rather than focusing on the negative and what needs to be fixed. While every place has a 'needs improvement' area, there's always a balance in what it has to offer. It's an overall quite safe neighborhood and seems kid friendly.
