What is the difference between an indentured Indian labourer (IIL) and a slave?

Indentured means that you are in a contract in means of apprenticeship but being a slave means that you are owned by an individual, so the IILs were given monthly wages and slaves weren't paid in money but in food and shelter. The IILs were given provisions and healthcare meanwhile slaves had to take care of themselves. At the end of the initial three-year contract the IILs were given free passage back to India but the slaves had to keep working until their owners decided otherwise.

What were the conditions Indentured labourers found in?

The Indentured labourers erected the own shacks and were able to cultivate small patches of the surrounding land for their own use. If they were not exhausted they had to build shelters and they found themselves in very cramped spaces because there were a lot of indentured Indians. Although families were not supposed to be split up a lot of them were.
