Rocky: A character of self reliance

The Italian Stallion is a prime example of a self reliant man. Throughout his fighting career, he defined odds and conformed to no one. One example is in the 2006 movie "Rocky Balboa," where as a man in his mid 60's, he agrees to fight a young up and coming star. He is met with adversity but fights to the very end, and is still proud even after declared loser. He has the traits of a confident man who gives his all and disregards others' opinions. "What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think. This rule, equally arduous in actual and in intellectual life, may serve for the whole distinction between greatness and meanness." -Ralph Waldo Emerson. This quote connects to this man who relies on no one, and is independent in all his actions and decisions.

The Gambler by Kenny Rogers

This song by Kenny Rogers is widely believed to be a simple song about playing poker, but in fact, it is much deeper than that. This song is essentially about life, and how to be successful and sufficient on your own song through gambling metaphors. Many of the song's lyrics are similar to Emerson's essay, such as a lyric stating "You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, and know when to run," which is parallel to a quote from the essay, "So use all that is called Fortune. Most men gamble with her, and gain all, and lose all, as her wheel rolls. But do thou leave as unlawful these winnings, and deal with Cause and Effect, the chancellors of God. This is because they are both referring to fortune in life, and how men approach it differently and how their choices are similar to gambling.

Socrates is an example of a man that was a great thinker, but misunderstood during his time. He encouraged people to question everything around them and think for themselves, and is considered the father of Western philosophy. Unfortunately, authorities saw him as a threat and had him executed for supposedly poisoning the youth.
