Compassion fatigue and burnout in the profession of counseling is real and can cause many great professionals to leave the industry. After reviewing resources regarding burnout and or compassion fatigue, I have come t realization that many objectives can be the cause. While I can not touch on each objective reason behind burnout, I would like to focus on a few. Counselors facing burnout can be caused from the heavy workload. Oftentimes counselors wear many different hats. For instance, sometimes school counselors have responsibilities that are not part of the comprehensive school counseling program. Another aspect for counselors to experience burnout is due to personal self care. I have been told. if your cup is empty how can you fill someone else's cup. I believe this to be true in all areas of life. Counselors tend to give, but in reality counselors need self care to ensure they are the best versions of themselves. Another aspect that read about was counselors trying to "fix" everything. I feel as though that is what is expected of counselors. In reality, counselors can not fix every clients and or problem that arises. It is in the counselors best interest to know that going into counseling. While burnout is real and happening each day, I hope that with brining more light onto the subject, we can begin to see a shift.

I believe self-care is a crucial aspect of the helping profession to ensure we are our best versions of ourselves. Self-care can be explained and executed in many different ways. Many people do different things that results in self-care due to a difference in personalities. Self-care to me, is what make you happy, and what enables you to be the best version of yourself. I believe self-care can result in more energy, better perspectives, along with happiness in the work environment and life.

Self-care is something that as I get older, I realize the importance it holds. Self-care does not always come natural, but something I strive for in my life. One aspect of self care i focus on is my physical health. When I move my body, it instantly improves my mood and outlook on my day. While the movement or physical activity varies, I enjoy lifting weights and going on walks.

Additionally, I plan to incorporate more social boundaries. Often times, I feel as though I can not say no to people or spend an immense amount of time on social media. My goal is to have healthy boundaries with my friends and family. I also would like to limit my time on social media due to challenges that can arise from it. I find myself comparing, wasting time, as well as engaging in mindless activity which is actually not mindless at all!

I have created a plan and key aspects I would like to stay encouraged by when it comes to physical, social, emotional, and spiritual health. My goal is to utilize this plan when working as a professional counselor as well as a graduate student. As a wife, mother, teacher, student, and friend it can be overwhelming to balance it all. Being mindful and practicing self-care, will help me stay encouraged and positive in the many hats that I wear.
