I think that the author Thomas Hardy was trying to suggest that if you were to meet your enemy somewhere other than the battlefield, you would have become friends instead of foe. It’s not always someone’s choice to be drafted into the war so they may have the same perception as the opposing side but they have no other choice but to fight but just because he was wearing the uniform as the opposing side, you must shoot him or be shot yourself.

Dear Avery,
I have a family of four, my mother, father and brother, we live in a city currently being
taken over by Nazi soldiers. Not to mention that my family and I are Jewish and recently people of Jewish culture have been going missing and taken to camps. I think that I’ve endangered my father by giving him some advice and I need some advice of my own.
My father was in a quandary over what to do at his job. He works as a doctor and must treat the Nazi soldiers. He is unable to deny them treatments and while eavesdropping on his
conversation with my mother, I decided to pitch in and suggest that he gives them certain treatments that may help with one illness or injury but have a specific side effect that will keep them from returning to their posts. I now fear that they will find out what he is doing and take my family away and put us into camps.
I am clueless if I should encourage him or if I should tell him to stop and I’m afraid for his
and our safety.

Sincerely, Clueless Child

I really liked this book, it applied real-world stories and events. I found it exceptionally interesting and it had great structure. The characters developed well and Lisa became more confident in her role in the resistance and she developed into a brave young adult. The story had a significant connection to the real world, especially now during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and how the citizens are fleeing to countries such as Poland, Romania, Moldova, Canada, the USA and plenty of other countries. Additionally, the chemistry between the characters feels genuine and real. As well as some astounding descriptions of the characters and their expressions, the settings and the situations, I could picture them in my mind almost instantly, I felt as though I was truly part of the story. This book was probably one of the best books I’ve read for school but probably tied with The Outsiders. I’d give Lisa’s War a solid 8.5/10 only because it was quite short, I’d like there to be more to the story. I genuinely enjoyed the book and I’m ecstatic to watch the movie.

1) In chapter one, the members of Lisa’s family have different reactions to the invasion of the Nazis. Describe their reactions.

Stefan was really mad, he said Denmark didn’t even try to fight back against the German soldiers.

Mother and father seem scared, although I would be to. They are most likely scared that their children will be hurt by them and their other loved ones.

Erik brushes it off like nothing happened he doesn’t seem fazed at all.

Lisa seems scared by the Germans but even more scared of what Stefan is saying about them.

2) In chapter two, what dilemma does Lisa’s father face?

Lisa’s father is a doctor and he has to decide whether he should help the Germans that come in. Lisa had suggested giving them things that will keep them in bed like giving them pills that will help one thing but cause other side effects.
At the very end of chapter two, Lisa has an important realization about how much the war has changed things. What does she realize? Explain your answer. (2)
She realizes that her idea might just get her father and the rest of her family killed.

3) Why does Lisa decide to follow Stefan and Jesper? What does she discover?

Lisa follows them because she heard them arguing. She followed them to a park where they picked up a package left by a man. In it are leaflets from the resistance.

4) What “game” do Stefan and Lisa play with the Nazi soldiers?

They play Chicken. It’s when they will pretend not to see the Nazi soldiers and they will walk toward them and see who backs out first.

5) Name three things the Resistance has done to fight back against the Nazis.

They have been leaving leaflets around Denmark, they have blown up factories that produce items that help the Germans and they’ve been giving more information about the invasion on the radio.

6) How does the Resistance “tell” the Danes the real news of the war?
They write the news in leaflets and they will leave them out in the street.

7) At the end of the chapter, Lisa is waiting anxiously for Stefan. Why?
She wants to ask him if she can help him and Jesper aswell.

1) Give four reasons why Lisa’s fourteenth birthday is so memorable?

-She got to dance with Jesper
-She got a new (temporary) sister
-There was an explosion at the dance hall
-Her friend Susanne got hit with the bomb

2) When Lisa tells Stefan and Erik about the hospital massacre, how does Erik react? Why does his reaction make Stefan so mad?

When Lisa told the story to the boys, they both seemed upset although Erik mentioned that if the people at the hospital had minded their own business then they wouldn’t have been found in that situation. That’s what made Stefan mad because Erik claims that it’s their fault they were shot dead.

3) What “surprise” is waiting at home for Lisa and Stefan when they get back from Lisa’s birthday celebration? (1)

Once Lisa and Stefan return to their appartement, they are greeted with a small bundle containing the baby from the hospital. The baby had no family in close proximity to where they lived so in the meantime, the baby would have to stay with them. Apparently, before the operation, Lisa’s father went to talk to the now-deceased mother and she was so sure that it would be a girl, they only had a female name picked. Her choice was Sarah. Lisa was excited about her new newborn sibling, especially because it was a girl.

4) What happens to Susanne in chapter seven?

While Susanne was at the dance hall, they were playing swing music and the Germans decided to bomb the building because it was irritating them. Susanne was caught in the explosion and she lost most of her hair and she got severe burns. Her parents were also caught in the eruption and perished.

5) In chapter eight, what was Susanne’s motivation for helping with the resistance bombing?

She engaged in the bombing as revenge for what the Germans did to her parents.

6) After they set the factory bomb, Lisa says the following:
“A chill runs down my spine. My God, I think, these Germans are dragging us all down to their level. How will we keep ourselves better than them?” (p. 46)
In your own words tell what does Lisa mean by this and what is she concerned about?

The Resistance is stooping down to the German’s level to get back at them for what they did.

In this chapter, they all leave the psych ward in a group of ambulances and wait on the side of the road behind trees and bushes for a boat to take them to Sweeden, in this chapter, everyone witnesses a man who slit the throats of his wife and two kids but couldn’t go through with taking his own life. The driver of the ambulance comes back but informs them that something happened with the boats that were supposed to take them to Sweeden. The drive brings them to a summerhouse for everyone to stay in until they figure out a way to get to Sweeden. Stefan then offered for Lisa to stay and help patrol for the new groups of refugees. Jesper and Lisa shoot two German soldiers that were looking at the boat that came in for the refugees. Once they were dead, the refugees make their way to the row boats that will take them to the bigger boat and then to Sweeden.

Quotation Explanation

1) “I remember I was dreaming about a bee. A giant bumblebee. It was buzzing in my ear; it was going to sting me. I opened my eyes and sat up with a start, but the buzzing didn’t stop.”
This was the very start of the book, Lisa had a dream about a bee but when she woke up it was still there. This quote is important because it marked the very beginning of the invasion of Denmark.

2) “I leap off, dragging my bag, run into the grass and trees beside the stop, and finish throwing up. Then I sink down by my sack. I’m weak, I’m shaking. I think I’m crying, and my mouth tastes terrible. I want to go home. How did I get myself into this? I think back to the streetcar. All those people – they saved me. Maybe they saved my life.”
In the book, Lisa wanted to help the Resistance and distribute pamphlets in streetcars. One of the streetcars that she boarded was soon occupied by two Nazi soldiers. At the next stop, she tried to get off and then threw up on the soldiers and a group of people guarded her from them so she could exit the streetcar safely.

3) "She whispers to me, ‘That was for Mama and Papa. But it was only the first.’ She’s actually enjoying herself.
A chill runs down my spine. My God, I think, these Germans are dragging us all down to their level. How will we keep ourselves better than them?”
This quote was said by Susanne, this was after they blew up a factory occupied by German soldiers. Before this, Susanne’s parents perished in an explosion at the dance hall they owned. Lisa believes that everyone is stooping down to the German’s level to get back at them. She thinks that if they want to defeat them, they have to be better than that.

4) “ ‘No, Father, it can’t be!’ I cry. I’m not willing to accept what he’s getting at. What does it matter that we are Jewish? I don’t feel any different than anyone else, and I’m not treated differently. Now will I have to be only a Jew? Is being a Jew all that’s important about me? The very name Eichmann makes me feel sick to my stomach.”
I think that Lisa was trying to imply that being Jewish doesn’t make you all that different from everyone else. Sure, they do have different beliefs than some people but that doesn’t mean German soldiers should start killing them.

5) “ ‘I’m afraid there will be no service tonight at the synagogue,’ Father continues. ‘Rabbi Melchior told everyone at the early service that he’ll be closing the synagogue. He’s going on holiday.’
I almost laugh. The rabbi going on holiday on Rosh Hashanah?
Then it hits me.”
Her father is hinting that the Germans will be doing a roundup of Jewish citizens and that they have to find somewhere to hide. Lisa then goes home and calls every Jew she knows and searches the phonebook for Jewish-sounding names to warn them about the roundup.
