Poe's father and mother died before he was three years old, and John and Frances Allan raised him as a foster child. Later in life, Poe developed a mental illness and turned a bit crazy, which was reflected a bit in his books/poems. Edgar Allan Poe was a writer, poet, critic and editor best known for short stories and poems that captured the imagination and interest of readers around the world. His imaginative storytelling and tales of mystery and horror gave birth to the modern detective story.
