For example, the fifteenth amendment to the constitution stated that Congress would defend all citizens' rights to vote no matter their race or identity (doc 4). This proves that Reconstruction had a monumental and immediate impact on the U.S. and focused on bringing all Americans Civil Rights no matter their race. The historical context of this document in 1870, just after the end of the Civil War, is important to the message of the document because it shows that the U.S. Government wanted to make Civil Rights a priority right away after slaves were freed, and the right to vote was a great start to this movement.

Ferdinand L. Barnett, an African American lawyer, explained that the education system was "a pernicious system of discrimination which invariably operates to the disadvantage of the colored race" (Document 6) when he spoke to the the National Conference of the Colored Men of the United States. His speech intended to rally other colored men to advocate for equal education. Although schools were implemented for African Americans, the utilization of these schools was poor, and made sure that white schools always stayed above those of blacks, making sure the hierarchy in the South never changed.

Document 1 - Under the Freedmen's Bureau, African Americans were granted the ability to attend schools. This newly gained freedom, in which white women are educating black children, provides these black children with a chance at becoming educated (Doc 1). While this may develop a sense of serenity that black children have the opportunity to learn, it does not demonstrate the truth behind the schools; in which they were segregated, underfunded, as well as burned at the stake due to armed pro slavery groups, such as the KKK.

Document 3- Reconstruction was an idea meant to spread equality, but when trying to make the United States equal, division arose and manipulation became a major factor. Many groups against African Americans, such as the klu klux klan, came forward and publically spread hateful stereotypes and created new rules just to diminish their race. The Klu Klux Klan had elitists and common white men forming together, “in this state, to be to disarm, rob, and in many cases murder Union men and negroes.”(Source 3). They used propaganda and other ways to manipulate people into thinking African Americans were the enemy.

Reconstruction was not successful in creating equality for African Americans from 1865-1900s. For example African Americans were still doing the work in cotton estates that they would've in slavery (Doc 7). The age of which these African Americans were while doing this work varies from children to elderly. Considering this was in 1895 this was many years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been in affect.

Document 2- Some people may say that reconstruction form 1865-1900 had a large impact on united states states society due to the improved black rights, however, reconstruction had little impact on united society due to continued oppression on African Americans, and segregation based on race. Therefore the in the time period of 1865-1900 reconstruction fostered little change in united states society.

According Frances Butler Leigh, a former slave owner, after the civil war African Americans had a a great improvement of rights including the right to vote while white men in the south were restricted of that right due to the involvement of the civil war.
Y- The American Civil war was fought in order to end slavery. With the passage of the 13th amendment African Americans were integrated as part of society. Organizations such as the Freedmans beareu insured African Americans there rights showing how there was greater change in society,
Point of view- From the point of a view of a former slave owner Leigh would likely think that African Americans being given more rights during reconstruction is wrong and would feel oppressed by the rights given to African Americans giving the document a bias.

Document 3 - In Major General J. J. Reynolds’ report to the US Secretary of War, he brings to light the existence of a major hate group known as the KKK, and explains their crimes and goals in enforcing their new ideals of White Supremacy in the South once slavery is gone (Doc 3). Reynolds clearly implies that the point of view of many non-White Supremacists and black people is fear directed towards the KKK and other hate groups. Their point of view exemplifies the new society White supremacists have built, and the long lasting changes for all minorities because of the fear and power.

Document 3 - One case of Reconstruction changing United States society was the KKK, which was a retaliation against it. In 1868, Major General J. J. Reynolds wrote about them, saying that their goals were to attack black people and those who supported black people or didn’t join them. This shows an effect on United States society because the creation of large militia groups as an act against Reconstruction would never have happened without it.
