For those who were in the Nobility, the ruling class, they were taught that the only work that they should do is to be a warrior. By showing his courage and skill in battle, a nobleman would gain wealth and greatness. This eventually lead to the idea of Chivalry. And if you follow the codes of Chivalry about being a strong, brave, pious and loyal warrior who defends the Church, the weak and the helpless then you get a good reputation and be great. Let's re-read page 298.

Now think about people like Filippo Brunelleschi and the Medici's.  

  1. What are they remembered for? 
  2. How did these men achieve greatness?
  3. The meaning of Arete in the Middle Ages comes from being warrior. In the Renaissance how can a person be 'great'?
