There are multiple areas that I feel I need to improve in to be a better person and professional.

One is public speaking and confidence around unknown people that could have an impact on my future. I can publicly speak, I just find it difficult, nerve racking and I tend to speak to fast and become difficult to listen to and difficult to understand, its worse when I know people in the crowd or audience that I am presenting to as I know that they will give me honest feedback. I also tend to go off topic into topics that only sub-relate to the main topic of the talk unless I have a script or detailed flashcards/cue points/PowerPoint slides.

Another weakness that I have is body shame and constantly feeling like everyone is watching or looking at me and talking negatively about me because of my appearance or something I said, this can affect me professionally in the fact that what I could consider professional someone else might not.

Another improvement area is to stop letting my stray thoughts take over my brain while I’m trying to work and leading to me getting little to no work that I was supposed to get done, done and work that I didn't have to do, cleaning random things or organising something that was already neat and tidy been done instead. This can affect me professionally by having to delay projects I'm on because I would have only half finished my part due to the wondering thoughts or I would have done everything super quickly and not to the criteria that needed to be followed.

Discovering and understanding history and how it affects everyone and everything.

Reading most books, I can get my hands on and pulling apart the plot line to see where the author could have written something different to change the entire outcome of the book or series.

Creating fictional worlds and stories in my head.

Understanding why author motivations in storytelling and how it affects the novel and audience.

Another interest of mine is to organise anything I can get my hands on; cupboards, drawers, boxes, and play Tetris when trying to put any number of boxes and oddly shaped objects into a small or minimally sizes space.

I have many values that include teamwork, honesty, accountability, respect, loyalty, empathy, and courage.

Honesty and accountability tend to hand in hand with each other. Being honest about your circumstances and actions and taking responsibility for your actions and words and their consequences makes everyone a better person. Being honest and accountable for your actions in the academic world is a major part of your character and how others perceive you and your work.

Respect and loyalty are all needed in any workplace, especially in academia, you must respect the work of others and show loyalty towards your co-workers and friends by standing up for them and being nice or at least friendly with those you work with.

Courage is a major part of academia, as you must have courage to actually publish your work and open it up to criticism from everyone and know that the feedback you receive from that work may not be good or even polite, just what people think with no filtering.

One of my many goals to achieve in just under 3 years is to complete my Bachelor of Arts, passing all the courses, having fun and making friends while not giving myself a mental break down in the process.

Another goal is to have defined my career and job parameters by the end of May 2026 (the end of my second year) and to have started searching for employment opportunities to better encourage me to finish my course with having to redo any courses.

A ten-year goal of mine would be to have either mostly or completely paid off my HECS debt and to have established myself in my career/profession. This would greatly help reduce the amount of finical strain upon myself if I need to apply for a loan.

Another life goal of mine is to be happy in both my professional and personal life and to live a life of laughter and love.

To achieve my goal of finishing my BA, I need to attend every class I can, only missing them due to transportation issues or being sick, and in those situations making sure to email a classmate and the professor for notes taken as to not miss out on key material.

To pay of my HECS debt I would get a job or find some way to make extra money to pay it off a little bit at a time.

To define my career parameters, I would need to discuss with a career advisor what would be the best course of action and get advice from someone who knows the field / profession I wish to enter.

To achieve my goal of being happy I need to make more friends, stop spending so much time alone, and to broaden my horizons into the world beyond going out to familiar places.

Potential Obstacles

Some potential obstacles that I might encounter in my professional career are not getting a job that pays enough to live with the cost of living at the moment and whatever it is going to be in the next 1, 5, 10, 15 years. Worrying about paying off my HECS debt in a timely manner as to not have it lingering in my head like a bad thought. Getting kicked out of university for not passing my courses or mucking up my referencing and getting kicked out for unintentional plagiarism. Another potential obstacle is having to move to a new state or country to find work in my field and not knowing anyone there and not having a support network.

I can overcome most of these potential obstacles by staying on top of my studies, having someone double check all my work and referencing, get a job and continue saving and only buying what I need with minimal wants to save money, and to continue paying off my HECS debt a little with each pay /payment period. The one obstacle I can’t change or think of a way to face is the moving to another state or country without a support system.

I think that these are all obstacles that most people will face, and I will probably find support and help dealing with them through the university and other avenues.

I conducted a general search on google to find many of resilience strategies that I had learnt about years ago, and then forgotten about. I found that there are a many more strategies to build resilience that what I remember. The ones that I identify with the most and that would help me in both my personal and professional life include, but are not limited to:

Establishing Goals: Goals give your life in all forms direction and can make life seem more manageable.

Taking care of yourself: Being health both mentally and physically can make great improvements on your mood, and you find it easier to get up each morning with a smile on your face.

Practicing self-compassion: Being critical on yourself can make anything to do with life seem hard, trying to always see at least one good thing in any situation that may make you be a 'Debbie downer' to yourself.

Acknowledge failures: Knowing when you've made a mistake is always a good thing, accepting that you made a mistake and acknowledging the consequences of it is more difficult depending on what the mistake was and whether or not you deliberately made it.

Connecting with others: Having friends and people in your corner can make all the difference in any situation. Building connections with new people can open you up to new perspectives and you get a chance to see another side of life or a different culture to what you normally see.
