I'm going to write about two of my favorite women we've learned about so far: Carry Nation and Jane Addams. I think they were both incredible women that greatly affected history, either by helping the temperance cause or by helping hundreds of people.

Wow!! Carry Nation was amazing!!! I think she used a really effective way to combat bars and saloons. What she did was sing temperance hymns until the bars shut down. If the peaceful protest wasn't enough, she literally threw bricks and hatchets! All that generated a bunch of publicity for her cause, which was temperance. Carry Nation was a really cool person, and I greatly admire her strategy.

Jane Addams (with two Ds!) was basically the forefront of the Progressive movement- she was the founder of the Hull House! By creating the Hull House, Addams helped thousands of people probably, and letting them become integrated with their community. Addams also promoted several reforms, including factory safety, child labor laws, better working conditions for women, and required schooling. She was a great person!

The Hull House was a house that people- immigrants, women, children- could live in or use the services provided. There were so many services, but some of them were school, soup kitchens, gyms, clubs, and daycare!

The fire was started by a cigarette that was dropped in a trash can full of fabric scraps. What's unbelievable is that a lot of the 146 deaths occurred because the owners, Harris and Blanck, locked the doors to make sure nobody left work early. Now that's a bunch of bs. So 146 people died, the world is outraged, and Harris and Blanck are accused of manslaughter because they indirectly killed 146 workers (mostly women and immigrants). Oh, but guess what? They get acquitted! I can tell you why that happened: they're men, they're white, and they're rich.

Even though the disgusting owners of the factory got off with no punishment, the world was seeing clear enough to realize that "hey, maybe we should care about the people we force to do our dirty work a little bit more." so New York ended up being the first state to pass worker safety laws. After that, there were more regulations on fire safety, and maximum hours and minimum wages were established. The fire was an awful event, it ended up helping workers.
