The African-Americans (black people) became an inferior race because they were slaves in the beginning. In the South things were really bad (think of the Jim Crow laws, Emmett Till,KKK and the movie Mississippi Burning).

In 1965 the Voting Rights Act was passed which allowed African-Americans to vote.

They made Americans (both black and white) see the unfairness and cruelty that African-Americans experienced.
Remember that in these decades, television was a new technology and this allowed Americans to see what was going on in their country.
Look at the major events again and see how many impressive historic events happened between 1960-1964.
