Describe your current writing process.

My current writing process is a linear one. It involves 7 ongoing processes: planning, drafting, sharing, evaluating, revising, editing, and publishing. Typically my writing assignments are assigned to me, I write, submit and I am given a grade and feedback based on criteria and/or a rubric. From the lecture, I learned that this process is referred to as a product based approach to writing instruction. I find this approach to be highly effective for my writing given my schedule because I have a consistent amount of time to write. Planning has been a part of my writing process since first grade. I like to gather information from source texts and from other adults perspectives before I write. From the lecture, I learned this can also be called the "pre-write" section of my writing process. As a writer I change my mind a lot so I need the drafting step in my writing process. I like to combine sentences and words until I find the perfect combination. Furthermore, sharing my ideas throughout all parts of my writing process is the part I love the most. My favorite person to share my writing with is my mom.

Gibbons, L. 2022, Feb 22. The Writing Process Lecture

Reflecting on Planning (Chapter 11)
The most important point from chapter 11 is that in order for students to plan to write effectively, as the teacher I must explicitly teach, model, and scaffold the planning strategies otherwise known as "strategies instruction"(Graham, S. p 246). In addition, it is important to teach self-regulation strategies with planning strategies to have an even greater impact on students writing. This is the most important point because planning strategies and self-regulation strategies are both recursive, meaning they are used repeatedly during the writing process and students won't use them if they aren't taught effectively.

Graham, S., MacArthur, C.
Reflecting on Revision (Chapter 12)

The most important point from chapter 12 is that students know revision and evaluation are guided by an understanding of audience and purpose because when proficient writers revise their work they think about if whether the message they are trying to write is clear to any given audience, their writing is coherent, and if they need to add or take away based on their own understanding of their writing. Revision begins with evaluation therefore students need to know evaluation criteria and the purpose for revision. The text says that "it is important to provide a classroom context in which writing has meaningful goals" (Graham, S. p 305). I believe that teaching students audience and purpose in multiple formats, with clear guidance, and ample time to practice evaluating and revising their writing and my classroom will begin to feel more organized and meaningful.

Graham, S., MacArthur, C.
