Rewards act as a strong motivator to guide our actions. Observing our behavior can let us see how much influence they have on us. B. F. Skinner claims that positive and negative consequences also guide our actions one way or another. Consequences of behaviors influence future outcomes that will generate more positive rewards. To receive rewards and positive feedback; behavioral theory states that we will continue to engage in said behaviors.

This theory explains our need for relationships and a sense of belonging. A human's perception is affected by past experiences with others. Understanding how emotions work together with our behaviors is significant to our self-development. Skinner explains the four stages of the learning process; attention, retention, reproduction, and motivation. Humans learn, and acquire new knowledge, and behaviors by observing others within their social circle.

Past experiences or schemas in a human's life shape how we interpret future events. Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget believed that feelings, thoughts, and behaviors have the power to process information and link concepts together. A negative outlook known as "Pre-Wire Thinking" can be rewired so it doesn't negatively affect new experiences. The mind's learning process bestows the ability to understand and memorize new concepts or ideas. Our perception, attention, and memory influence our behaviors; affecting our motivation and sense of purpose.

Maslow's Hierarchy of needs is a 5-tier pyramid that lists what humans require to feel fulfilled in life. Once we have mastered each element we can find peace and reach self-actualization. In order to get there, Maslow states that our basic psychological needs like food, shelter, and sleep must be met first in order to feel stability. Deficiency needs make up the first 4 tiers that lead to the final five tiers of growth needs. Reaching those levels in life help us feel a sense of self-fulfillment and stability that keeps our motivation going. When those needs are not met it can negatively influence our decision-making and stunt our personal development.

Motivation goes hand-in-hand with a sense of accomplishment. When we track and monitor our progress we can easily see what needs to be done and what has already been finished. "To-do lists" as the textbook states are a great strategy for future projects and tasks. I feel motivated to pursue other goals when I have a visual element tracking my progress.

This theory best helps me reach my goals because I can create a reward system. I am someone who is highly motivated by both internal and external sources. That being said, academic goals are easier to reach when the rewards are knowledge and skills. Motivation can be kept high by participating in social activities once my work has been completed. By applying this theory in my daily life, it's easier to stay committed to my goals while also meeting my basic needs.
