I have only used group projects in my F2F classes. One technique I found useful is a mini "charette." Here the students act as "stakeholders" and brainstorm the impacts of a specific human-environment issue such as sea level rise, invasive species, urban sprawl, etc. Students get very interested in the topic and each brings their own perspective. At the end of classes, each groups presents their conclusions.

I have avoided groups with my online classes though as in the few times I have attempted it, students often got antagonistic with the member that doesn't "participate" until the very end.

I would like to see how to develop a group project in my large online IFP course though.
