The International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) is an international organisation with its permanent secretariat in Vienna. It was established by the Danube River Protection Convention, signed by the Danube countries in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 1994.
The commission became active in 1998. Since then, it has grown into one of the largest and most active international bodies of river basin management expertise in Europe. The commission deals not only with the Danube itself, but also with the whole Danube River Basin, which includes more than 300 tributaries and the ground water resources.

Contracting parties of the ICPDR, with the European Union shaded in light green; excludes Montenegro.

The Danube River basin takes in a total area of 801 463 km² across the territories of 19 countries. As Europe’s second largest river basin, the Danube River basincontains critical ecosystems that are increasingly under pressure from development, urban expansion and pollution. The Danube River is considered the most important source of nutrient pollution in the Black Sea, as the river receives treated wastewater before draining into the Black Sea through the second-largest wetland in Europe ). A history of political alliances and conflict has led to difficult, and at times hostile, relations between the riparian countries (Wolf 2001).
The Tisza River Basin, with its total extent of 157,186 km², is the largest sub-basin in the Danube River Basin. The Tisza River is the longest tributary of the Danube (966 km), and the second largest by flow, after the Sava River. The states in the Tisza Basin agreed on a close transboundary co-operation, aiming to achieve integrated management of the Tisza River Basin. The Tisza is the longest tributary of the Danube (966 km) and drains an area of 157,186 km² in five countries (Slovakia, Ukraine, Hungary, Romania, Serbia).
In Ukraine along the Tisa river there are three national reserves and one national park. They aim to protect flora and fauna of the region.
