With the information they’ve gathered students can choose to use SeeSaw or Glogster, with the help of an adult, to create digital posters or “ads” that highlight amazing and cool facts about the species they chose. In it they can include facts about why they’re endangered, and how people can help them, in hopes of creating awareness.

3. Each small group will brainstorm ways to publish their posters and think about how they can get others to see them. For example, some might decide to print them and post them around the school or neighborhood, others might decide to ask our school newspaper to publish them, some might ask if they can leave some in their building lobbies, or post them on social media etc. Once they’ve come up with some ideas they can decide how to execute them.

She is unable to go to school; instead, she walks many miles every day to get a pot of murky water that has to be boiled before they can drink it. Gie Gie promises to bring water to her village, and as she becomes an adult she works with a foundation to build wells in her village and others like it. Like The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind, This story also depicts a different perspective. It is another great opportunity to teach privileged children about gratitude and to help provide a window into what it’s like not having a basic human necessity such as water.

This picturebook biography tells the story of Wangari Maathai, an environmentalist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, who had a true passion for the earth, its wildlife and its people. In the story, Wangari comes home to Kenya from studying in America, to find barren land due to deforestation. She decides to plant seedlings in her backyard. Soon, other women in the village begin to do the same followed by women in other villages, towns, and cities in Kenya. Wangari devises a plan to get people to continue to care for the seedlings. That’s not all, she also sacrifices her freedom in protecting the older trees that do remain, inspiring more to plant seeds. Over time, 30 million trees take root where there were none. This story is a great example of how just one person’s actions can inspire others to do the same, creating change on a much bigger scale.
