Edgar Allan Poe, born on January 19 in Boston, Massachusetts, was one of the most important and influential American writers of the 19th century. He was the first author to try to make a professional living as a writer. Much of Poe's work was inspired by the events that happened around him; he was orphaned as a child, he often argued with his brother-in-law, and his wife died of tuberculosis.

Edgar Allan Poe is known for his Gothic writing style, often called a master of suspense and horror. His style was made through his use of punctuation, sentence structure, word choice, tone, and figurative language. He often wrote about very emotional topics, and used simple words to talk about heavy topics.
Excerpt from The Raven:
"Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December;

And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.

    Eagerly I wished the morrow;—vainly I had sought to borrow

    From my books surcease of sorrow—sorrow for the lost Lenore—

For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore—

            Nameless here for evermore."
Analysis:
This poem is a good example of Poe's writing style, dark, suspenseful, and ensuing fear in the readers.
