Only some students attempted to give an explanation for the electrical conductivity of ionic compounds. These students had some misconceptions or used the wrong terms. One student was successful in providing the correct explanation. As a group, we agreed that the students did not apply their knowledge in a new context. We could improve on this by providing more time for students to think about the question and prompting students to elaborate on their answers.
